Final Paper topic:
Periods of war marginalize men and women and place them in gendered roles as feminine and masculine. Women are generally portrayed as the weaker sex while men are portrayed as the dominant and powerful sex. As a result, the sexual abuse of women through rape and other means is often a means of sexual conquest. The conquest of women is symbolically the conquest of land and another's nation. This paper will focus on the sexual conquest of women as a means to gain power and control as presented in literature. I will focus on Komunyaaka's "Dien Cai Dau" and a personal poem written from the perspective of an oppressed woman during a period of war.
