Writing From the Margins
Final Paper Proposal

The poetry we have covered throughout the semester have a wide range of topics including, violence, Post Dramatic War Syndrome, and sexuality. This last topic is what will be covered in my final paper. Human sexuality can have many different implications, like pain, anguish, and a sense of loss. These images are reflected in Yusef Komunyakaa’s Dien Cai Dau. Prostitutes and soldiers alike use sex as an outlet for releasing pain or as a reflection of it. Prostitutes during the Vietnam War regard sex as a representation of loss. They have sex with the same men who have killed their brothers and yet, they know that this way of life is commonplace within their country. Therefore, their sense of independence is warped and they are reduced to sexual objects. The Vietnam soldiers look to these women for temporary solace. Being so young and inexperienced, they have also been forced to look at sex as being a type of ritual in order to keep sane. They would rather relish in the sexual act—an act that creates life, than to continue to dwell on incessant morbid death they see everyday. This is what sex is to them-temporary peace. Therefore, political implications are implied by this sexual act.
Contrary to this idea, Tim Seibles looks at sexuality as being very natural and necessary. So, why is sex taboo in American society? How does Seibles demonstrate his point of sex being more acceptable than violence is? What are the political implications demonstrated by his poem Bonobo?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!!
