Maybe the addictions themselves are a hypermasculine avoidance mechanism for not feeling the core wound. They ARE an attempt to escape from pain AND an attempt to control it. What could fit the definition of hypermasculine any better?

And at the same time I'm right in there with you when it comes to self-discipline. Just CAN'T do it. So I'm wondering what's up with this "no" I'm saying to addictive behavior. Not self discipline I can tell you that. Not effortful. It's a passionate motivation to be whole, to allow all of me to come forward. A passion to feel deeply even though it consumes me with it's intensity.

Must be that inspiration you speak of. Seriously. You may be right about addictions running a course. Until finally one ordinary day, without any forethought, abstinence becomes inspiring.
