Ok... I'll try to answer these questions but I'm really not sure I understood the story well -_-

Successor of the Rood Inverse? Like Guildenstern's last form? I have no idea... but it didn't strike me as too important to the story...

I believe Phantom Pain refers to the kind of curse Ashley's received with the Blood Sin.

Even though there are many versions for this, I understood that it was in fact an illusion made by Ashley... and that Sydney did die in Lea Monde when it crumbles.

That's what he says... he says Ashley was supposed to be his successor. I guess Sydney had foreseen that he was going to die and he'd prefer letting the power he had into good hands.

I think that most of the VKPs are able to use the dark like he is... just look at Rosencrantz, Merlose or others that gain special powers too. But Ashley seems the best of them anyway...
