Come to think of it, one of the best OFC fics I've ever read featured a main character who did technically appear in canon in a Figwit-like role. Only, her canonical appearance only gets a very brief mention in the fic - you could quite easily skip the reference altogether without realising - and she's a great character. So, yes, I think it _can_ work, but the Figwit thing? Well. Um.

Yes, and that makes it more difficult. You'd get all the downsides of canonical blank slates without any of the good points, like having the freedom to create your own character with no fanonical baggage.

It's probably prejudice on my part, too, but I'd agree with that. Figwit could still be a nice peg to hang a good plot on, about an elf who doesn't get a mention in canon, but surely a story which did that wouldn't need to say "And by the way, he's the dark-haired one you see in this screenshot"?
