Subject: Placement Procedures

Hi folks,

I'm separating from the Air Force in January as a personnel officer and will be enrolling in one of the newest CTI programs (Univ of Oklahoma) this spring. I know some folks have expressed concern that the newest batch of CTI schools will produce lower quality graduates than the "legacies", but OU has a long history of ATC contractual training with the FAA/MMAC and I'm sure once our program becomes more established, we'll take our place as one of the top programs in the country.

Anyway, enough about OU. I have a question regarding placement of new hires. I've read in the past that when you are offered a position by the FAA, they will contact you with generic information such as "Tower-TX" or "Center-AK", without telling you exactly what facility you're headed for. When do you find this out and do you have any say in that? I'm actually from OK originally and would love to be placed at OKC itself, but I'm not sure if I'd have a say in it.

P.S. I was encouraged by a former poster who said it was best to name unpopular states if you wanted to be placed more quickly - I had assumed states in most need of controllers, such as CA or NY, would be the best locations to choose in order to expedite selection. I'm even more encouraged about my desire to be placed at OKC by the fact that once the Academy is over, new-hires want to bolt from OKC as fast as possible :)

God Bless from Oklahoma.
