>I think that college is not a place where people need to be "washed out" but a place to learn the basics. It is a stepping stone per say. I understand the writers opinion on thinking the CTI program is a waste, but it depends on each individual. It wasn't a waste for me, I got what I wanted which was a college degree. I think each school is very different and the students need to know about wash out rates and how it was and how it is now with most washing out at their facilities now instead of in OKC. Their perception of also spending tons of money on a degree in ATC is also a little misconstrewed. When someone comes out of college with $100,000 in student loan debt I feel confident in saying that that individual went through the flying program or part of it and decided not to become a pilot. The debt comes from flying, not from lab fees and tuition. Sure, some colleges have more expensive tuition than others so that racks up the total debt, but as for UND the debt for me and for most others that have a high amount comes from the flying! I make sure people know that at my facility. I also let them know how much I appreciate having a college degree even though it may look like I didn't need it for ATC right now. My career is just beginning as a new CPC and I can't say that my degree won't come in handy when I look at my future. People are frustrated right now and they look at CTI students coming in that just don't have what it takes and they think, "what a waste of money for them", but is it really? For example, the guy that came in behind me had a CTI degree and ended up washing out on ground control. When I talked with him he was not discouraged, but knew that he could not do ATC and that he was already looking into airport management because he had the degree already!!
