Subject: Two Halves don't make a whole

Literally a game of two halves. First 30 mins we had 70% possession and 400 odd passes, yet we mustered one shot on goal. They had 30% possession and scored! Great to have TC back in the team but it was so pedestrian and slow. He is no more than an impact sub to use when we need to slow the game down and control the ball. The one time we did put together a fast move we opened them up and Wilson got brought down.

Time and again we had the ball in the final 1/3 and gave them time to get their shape back. They are a well drilled team and when you can throw on five subs, which they did, we are not going to tire them out. The longer it went on, the more those sat around me grew more and more anxious as we failed to score. And so it came to pass. 1-0 to Ipswich. Half time.

Second half, helter skelter, second and third changes to formations, which the team took time to adjust to. Game opened up, passing became faster and more desperate - it was a total contrast to the first half. Some observations in no particular order. Jiminez’s best game for us so far, worked his socks off. Robinson had a poor game, so many poor passes and crosses. Pereirra – stop taking corners you can’t clear the first man. I would not be bothered if he left provided we brought cover in. Which brings me onto the question why we cross so much into a crowded box filled with taller defenders. Maybe it is because we don’t have a forward with pace who can get behind defences or dribble, who we can play balls over the top to. That player was meant to be Adama who becomes more ineffective with every game. Again I expect little from him when he comes on. He is a novelty player. I thought ESR looked bright when he came on and moves the ball faster than TC and moves to receive the ball back. But I do doubt he has 90 mins in him.

So from the bottom four clubs – Southampton, Ipswich, Wolves and Leicester.. total 15 points we have taken 6 points. That is not good enough for a team pushing for a top six spot. Against the top four clubs – Liverpool, Arsenal, Forest and Chelsea total 12 points – 8 points… top six form….. A season of two halves of the table!!

And the ref... well awful
