were they really as poor as a fair few have made out ? I saw a Team with limited ‘flair ‘ play to their strengths and in so
doing present the same problems to us as they did to CFC, Spurs and even Arsenal whose flair only rewarded them a 1-0 on the night . Truth is not many relish playing against a resolute set up who were also prepared to press and frustrate : a challenge to their opponents to play through them and try to break them down . The reverse game back in Aug I came away from thankful there were no additional
minutes beyond the added time afforded . They have physicality ( Delap),pace ( esp the absent Hutchinson ) and perhaps are now finding that street -wisdom needed when up against it . By far the best of the 3 promoted sides and most definitely with the best Coach of the 3. Despite our lamentations over formations and personnel , what was missing yesterday was the creativity to pick through them. Who is the closest of our players to make that happen , TC, AP, or far more likely ESR. As I suggested yesterday ESR would be far more effective with runners alongside him, as opposed to trying to pass to feet requiring almost 100% accuracy . With our improved league status should come yet another higher level of player sought in the Market.

That was precisely the problem, we were trying to PICK through them instead of getting the ball forward QUICKLY and breaking with pace. Cairney and Andersen looked like 75-year-olds playing walking football. Gives the opposition loads of time to get behind the ball. - For the first half Ipswich only had the ball less than 25% of the time, so breaking wasnt really on the cards. Short of deliberately giving them the ball to make them attack us, we just tried getting the ball wide, and crossing into a congested box outnumbered by defenders. We have missed that left-side triangle of Robinson, ESR and Iwobi. I didn't like it as much when Nelson was there but it was still good. But in the last month or so its been completely absent. They'd done their homework and carried out the Managers instructions well, apart from conceding two penalties. They allowed little space for Iwobi and Robinson, the two players we had who could create scoring chances. They have a decent keeper who played well and Delap who is very confident. Mckenna is a shoe in for Man Utd if Amorin fails to deliver on expectations. I was disappointed that Cairney did not get any shots on goal, but to be fair to him he never found the room. When you play against a low block side - how do you get to move the forward and with pace? Space in the final third is so condensed - the game then becomes more chess like - probing for weaknesses with lots of slow slow and hopefully quick quick (in tight spaces) slow - for me you need your best technical players on the pitch in these circumstances and 3 CB's is a waste of a more technical player (NT) -- f bloke, Monday, January 06, 03:13:48pm (host86-134-9-66.range86-134.btcentralplus.com/86.134.9.66)
- Last part presumably acknowledged by Marco at h/t. ESR duly made those two key passes and missed the headed chance he had nevertheless spotted and made rapid ground for. He's been too peripheral to date, but yesterday was a reminder of what he'd been bought for. Now needs to be trusted with a run of starts, and see what happens. I think ESR was bought ahead of our ability to use him effectively due to the players we currently have up front and in the middle. Like many of our "buys", a good portion of them took time to adapt, and often due to the fact we didn't have the skills on the pitch yet to most effectively bring out their best. Very limited side, pundits going on about Rory Delap when the better Number 9 by a country mile was playing in white... their bench is desperately weak which is why they will go down... plucky, but last season's Luton... will run out of steam when push comes to shove, Everton, Palace and Wolves just have more options.
