He was also being played as an inverted right winger for much of it, which seemed to destroy his confidence. Phil Foden, a year older, in his breakthrough season, got 7 contributions. In reply to: eganonoa 's message, "Small sample definitely, but if you look at the one season before this that ESR & Sess each had a full Premier League run they are very close: e.g. 8 goal contributions for Sess to ESR's 12, but each with Expected contribs of 8. Sess' time in the Championship FAR out did that of ESR at Huddersfield. Sess' & Nelson's respective times at Hoffenheim are about equal whereas Sess' best PL season is much better than Nelson's. I think we're seeing over-expectations of ESR/Nelson and under- of Sess" on Tuesday, March 18, 11:10:00pm

I’m glad it was not just me that remembers Parker playing him inverted. His confidence was ebbing by that point but playing him inverted just about destroyed it. The conundrum with Sess is whether he is a good enough footballer to justify a place if his goal scoring dries up. - It was a double whammy, wasn't it. Started with going from a manager who trusted him and developed him, to Ranieri, who publicly called him out, hauled him off at half time 3 times, to Parker, who played him in a completely alien position.   - This is what I mean by there being an unbalance in the expectations. Questions the right position to play in (see questions over ESR playing as a wide forward or No. 10), age, confidence and fitness apply equally to all three, yet if we're basing our upside calculations on past form on balance that points towards Sess. Yet the pre-season expectations were wildly different. I suppose this is more a way of saying that ESR needs more time and patience than it says anything about how we handle Sess.     - Yes, agree with all that, albeit, i've been saying for quite a while that i think we've slightly under-utilised Sess this season. I understand why to some extent, but i think part of the problem is that he only seemed to be considered LB cover for the first 4 months or so, (when we have a LB who plays every minute) whereas recently we've seen his quality as a wide midfield option. When we've needed a late goal, I think he's been an option we should have used more.       - Very much agree, though that's definitely not something I've been saying for a while as I most definitely succumbed to the thinking that he was a major reclamation project whereas ESR was a budding star. A post below made me realize that Sess reminds me of BDR; a multipositional tool whose good for a goal. My suspicion is that that's his floor, with Iwobi-levels of upside.
