Subject: I agree, it appears to be a primary school understanding of how international trade works and a belief that all trade deficits are bad - which is simply not true - deficits are very situationally dependent especially for an economy like the US that has pivoted away from manufacturing to hi tech and services. The formulas used for determining the tariffs are beyond crude
In reply to: eganonoa 's message, "If his "reciprocal" tariffs were indeed just "evening up the tariffs imposed on the US" that would be one thing. But they aren't. They couldn't be bothered, it seems, to actually find out what tariffs were being imposed and instead just took the percentage trade deficit with countries, halved it, called them "reciprocal" and then jacked on 10% to all the others where there's a surplus. Not sure what media you're digesting, but assume its mostly cartoon-based if you've missed that key fact." on Friday, April 04, 12:22:51pm
