Rice is probably England’s best number 6 type, but it’d not using his best abilities, but who else is there to play that Partey role? I know we have had this discussion before, but check out the excellent Adam Clery take on Rice as a 6 for England on his YouTube 442 review of the England Denmark game. He doesn't see him as a 6 since he can't play on the half turn and can't pick passes between the lines making it difficult to play through a high press. Does beg the Q - if not him - then who? - We aren’t miles apart, I agree he isn’t gonna become D.Murphy, start slipping short passes between the lines, he’s more a gerrard physical monster. Do think Tuchel is gonna be more direct though, try and be like a prem team, high energy, physical, bit like FFC in fact (time will tell if it works in international), means less need for a gomes type, he’s not even starting for Lille at moment. Partey isn’t a half turn type, yet Ars just battered Madrid, there’s no obvious solution.   - He has many of Gerrard's attributes other than Gerrard's passing range and that is my major criticism of him. If you play Rice the other 2 midfield players have to be progressive passers.     - That’s not necessarily true, in that Partey plays next to rice and is a weaker passer, I think you’ll see a far better rice without Southgate holding him back. This is a good analysis, i think you’re under selling rice as an all round player who’s improved a lot in a couple of years.
