But as much work as he put into the books I can't imagine he didn't have it fully worked out, and then slowly let the reader in on the whole deal.

another good example of this is the axoltl tanks. in the first 4 books we have no clear proof what they are. There is hints and allegations, like how no one has ever seen a tleiaxu woman etc.

But by the time the 6th book came around we fully understood that the tanks were the wombs of women. Frank always said that dune was to be 2 trilogies with GEoD being a bridge between the two. I firmly believe he only wanted to leak out bits and pieces in each book forcing the reader to put it together themselves.

Another is the worm cycle, not ever fully explained, but as the books progress our knowledge grows and we understand more.
