You're right. It wasn't 10000 years. I was confused by the intro to the chapter on p.72 (paperback) of HoD. It talks about the 10000th anniversary of the Metamorphosis of Leto II. I now realize that this must be a glimpse into the future, because of a few passages earlier in the novel. On page 7, Lucilla ponders how Jessica's persona is "buried some five thousand years back in the Sisterhood's genetic manipulations." Also on page 10 Frank writes, "...fifteen hundred years since the Tyrant's death..." Since Leto II ruled for 3500 years, that puts HoD at around 5000 years after Leto II became emperor. Sorry for the mix-up there.

But now this intrigues me. Why did Frank Herbert use a "flash-forward," if you will, as opposed to the more common flash-back? I doubt that he simply made a mistake in keeping track of the time line. There's some other motive here that I can't see. Maybe to give the readers their own sense of prescience?

Also, I completely agree with your comparison between the story in HoD and Chapterhouse and christianity. Although I'm not very religious, the concept of religion is still very intriguing. This is probably why HoD is my favorite at this point.
