Perhaps I should have been more clear about the logic problem...

The logic fallacy of "false dichotomy" means that you assume only two different possibilities when there are actually more than that.

The very statement you use to accuse me of fallacy is the one that is fallacious in the first place. You assume only two possibilities:

1. The prequel novels are canon, constituting the Dune universe exactly as it actually is in its fictional existance.

2. The prequel novels are not canon, and therefore provide no value toward understanding the history and backstory of the originals.

There is no logical reason to believe that these are the only two possibilities. I happen to believe differently from either of these positions and I don't see how that's fallacious. Allow me to try to explain my position on these two, unconnected points.

The prequels CANNOT be considered canon, unless they reflect the Dune universe with 100% accuracy. There can be NOT ONE contradiction, no matter how small, and there should not be inconsistancies either (though these are harder to make the argument with).

However, because they cover material that is so close in nature with events in Dune's past, they provide an interesting view of the type of things that were going on immediately prior to Dune, as well as giving the readers an idea of what life in the Imperium was like during the long period that House Corrino ruled. This aspect of them interested me so much, that I got an uncontrollable urge to play a role-playing game as the leader of a Great House during this period (okay, so it wasn't exactly "uncontrollable", since I was too lazy to ever actually do it).

I hope this clears things up there without sounding condescending.
