Well, if you don't consider it an inferior style, then that would explain why you wouldn't make a big sacrifice for it. Oh well.

Anyway, melodrama is fine; it just needs to be handled correctly. In House Atreides, it was handled just fine, for the most part. The Duncan Idaho plot line was obviously melodramatic, but that didn't bother me; I was interested. In House Harkonnen, however, we meet Gurney Halleck. Didn't anyone else find that plot line a little bit obnoxious? Didn't you ever roll your eyes at the pointlessness? In contrast, their description of the Leto-Kailea relationship in the same book was REAL emotion in beautiful detail.

Then there's House Corrino. Plenty to roll your eyes at in this one. Yes, every time Shaddam throws another temper tantrum there's something. Every time we get another description of Tleilaxu rule on Ix there's more. And worst of all: the Abulurd Harkonnen plot line. Was anyone actually interested in this crap? It's true: the books were good; but they had plenty of content that was not.

If the book were 1500 pages, maybe you would be happy, but I would not. I'm more interested in quality than in quantity. After Dune 7, the story of Dune can still be continued through fan fiction.

It's interesting to me that the prequel novels can be so much longer than the originals, while at the same time saying so much less. FH's brilliant and vivid descriptions make you feel like you are actually in the story. The prequels' metaphorical descriptions and melodrama just tell you what you are supposed to feel; they rarely make you feel it.

It always fascinates me how much meaning and content FH could pack into a single conversation. Nothing in the prequels came close to impressing me like that. There wasn't a hint of subtlety in them. No, sorry; it just seems like these authors don't know how to write Dune. Just my personal opinion. Whatever.
