There can be no faster than light travel without relative effects.

Let's say the the B.Jihad is somewhere around 10,000 years from now(I think it was more like 15,000 but we'll assume 10). If earth launched 100 ships traveling at about 5 percent the speed of light in about say...300 years, we would reach 100 planets within 100 years. If each of them launched 100 ships within 1000 years from colonization, we would reach 10,000 stars in about 100 years from then(give or take a little). That's roughly 10,100 stars we will have been to within 1,500 years from now. Now, launch 100 more ships from those 10,100 stars and you can easily see how we could travel very far within a 10,000 year expanse of time. 5 percent the speed of light(or even much slower) would have very little relative effects, and be plenty fast enough for humans to reach the number of stars and planets needed for the B.Jihad.

Now, say we need very powerfull A.I. to power these ships. For many years we need them and they need us to exist. Then we discover Dune and the spice. Perhaps we have known for a while how to travel instantly with a drive but untill spice was discovered, we had no way to control where we ended up(in the center of a star lets say). Or the spice allowed Holtzman(sp?) or Cenva, who were on the ship that discovered Dune maybe, to expand their mind and discover the drive. This coupled with the spices ability to give prescience would allow instant travel. This would spread throughout the vast empire through a new Guild, that would specialize in instant flight. The earlier ships with their powerfull and perhaps living A.I.'s would then become obselete. But instead of being scrapped or used for inferior tasks, they decide to retaliate and destroy mankind. You see, they would still have an advantage. In orbit they could easily destroy a ship that was only meant to travel through foldspace. The new ships would be sitting ducks. If the earlier ships planned right, they could enslave the unsuspecting humans, multiply, and be very hard to stop. Perhaps they are still out there in deep space(Dune7?).Sounds simple to me. But where's the fun in that?. Better to make it like Star Wars and sell a lot of books.
