Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Paul did not actually know that Irulan was giving Chani contraceptives, nor did he or Chani ever actually do anything to change it. Didn't Chani just get pregnant despite the drugs given to her, after she tried the special diet? It's not like he suddenly decided to get her pregnant. It was only the incredible growth rate and drain on her body that clued them in that she had been getting a contraceptive. So its not like he wasn't allowing it to happen.

I think that when he went into the stone burner trap he knew that he was probably triggering events that would lead to his visions of his "downfall" and Chani's death, and finding out that she was pregnant confirmed to him that it was coming to pass, because he knew that she would die after bearing his child and that this was tied in somehow. He had finally decided to stop fighting the future and that's why he went into the trap.

In other words, he selfishly staved off this future by avoiding traps and staying alive, by not pursuing the issue of why Chani was not conceiving, and delaying the golden path. I have to say I think it was more selfish than anything, up until the twins are born. So I guess I disagree with you, IDAHO.

However, once he was blinded and Chani was dead and Alia came to power, he had no reasons to act selfishly anymore. At this point he became actively involved in helping his people find the Golden Path.

My two cents.
