Author: IDAHO
Subject: Duncan Idaho and the Soul

From reading Dune, my guess is that Frank Herbert was a firm believer in a soul that somehow transcends it's phsyical limitations (however this IS just an educated guess).

But if this is the case, and each individual is imbued with a distinct soul, then how can one explain the case of Duncan Idaho and his recurring lives.

If the original Duncan Idaho dies and his soul passes on to some other place, when the flesh of the deceased Idaho is brought back as a ghola, is that ghola then somehow possessed of the same soul as the original?
The whole memory thing, is tricky in itself, but it makes only slightly more sense that ones memories can somehow be imbedded within the very fabric of each of your cells.
But what about the soul?

My roomate's theory is that each Duncan Idaho ghola, while having the memories of the previous Idaho's (or even just the original depending on the case), has its own distinct soul because it is really not the same Duncan. Each individual ghola is just that, an individual rather than a reincarnation or the same person that was killed defending Paul and Jessica.

Any thoughts or theories?
