I believe that in the "literal" sense Pual Muad'dib was NOT a Mentat. He never went through the complete Mentat school and he never took the sapho juce. However, he most certainly was a Mentat by ability. He denied that he was a Mentat because he saw himself as a mutation more than anything else (give him a break... he was in the process of becomming the Kwizats Haderach... it took time). However by shere computational ability, he was definately a mentat of the greatest caliber (remember, the Bene Gesserit had always intended for the KH to be a Mentat too... specifically THEIR mentat).
