Subject: Prayers For Tara

Author:
August West

Date Posted: 22:40:09 10/08/05 Sat

My 8 year old daughter Tara was cheerleading for her Pop Warner team on Sunday. She seemed perfectly fine.On Monday she awoke and her glands were swollen.I took her to her pediatrician and they in turn sent her to the emergency room.

While there she went through a battery of tests and the worst I was thinking was tonsilitis or maybe mono.

To make a long story short my wife and I were called into a conference room with a couple of doctors,as I sat down and looked into there eyes I knew something was dreadfully wrong.

And then it came like a freight train "Sir your daughter has a form of cancer called Luekemia".Wanna talk about a bad trip? This was gonna be it.

I live in Jersey but I have transferred my daughter to The Children's Hospital Of Philadelphia.I have something to ask of everybody who visits this board.

Could a fellow Deadhead get some prayers and good vibes for his little girl.I'm Roman Catholic but it matters none to me which denomination of faith you are, pleas say a prayer for my little girl Tara.It would mean alot to me.

Thanks,
Greg

hello there fellow deadheads!!! I am taking the clipper tonight from victoria to Seattle to see DSO. The boat gets in at 8:45 but it says the show starts at 8:00. Does anyone know when DSO usually goes on. Is it right at 8 or is that just when the doors open. Also, can you drink in the showbox?

.......how about the band simply book into larger venues, so all of these ridiculous audience territory issues become the non-issues they should be.

Is that so hard?

I would hope the band is not revisiting (and selling out) these woefully under-capacity venues simply for nostalgic reasons (whether theirs or local fans').

How many more tickets would they have sold in a larger venue than the Fox? And for three nights??!! How much more would everyone have enjoyed the shows had they not been crammed into an inadequate, ill-ventilated space, forced to constantly jockey for breathing room? (we have all gone through this from time-to-time and we all know it REALLY detracts from enjoying the music). I was really bummed I could not make the Colorado shows, until I heard how crowded they were.

If a 3 night sell-out isn't enough of an indicator that it is time to move on to larger spaces in that market, I can't think of what is (short of a fan stampede, Lord forbid!). The band would be foolish to play the Fox again, if only for the level of complaints from people about the battles for space. The Colorado fans, of which there seem to be quite a few, should step up and help the band line up better spaces in these markets, rather than complain.

Surely there have to be other options and room for some creativity, within the band's technical and other needs. Better the band undersell a larger venue by 10-15% than oversell a smaller venue at the cost of everyone's physical comfort and probably still to the exclusion of many more willing, but shut-out ticket buyers.

........on a side note, I have to take exception to the East Coast crowd-bashing, simply because it has no basis in any reality I have experienced, living in the East. Out of 100's of shows I have seen over 20 years from many, many bands in many, many venues, coast to coast, ranging from hole-in-the-wall bars to stadiums, I have found the most territorial, pushy, selfish crowds (about space) were in two places : Red Rocks and the Great American Music Hall.......'West Coast' musical meccas, to say the least. I had never seen such aggressive, obnoxious claim-staking in any general admission venues before or since.

I make no sweeping generalizations from this about 'East Coast' or 'West Coast' fans, since they all vary wildly with the venue and the band. To highlight, if GAMH was the worst I have seen, Shoreline (just 15 miles away) is the BEST I have ever seen.

On the whole, I have seen some seriously obnoxious Grateful Dead crowds in the East Coast, but never so with DSO crowds here.

DSO played numerous shows in an insufferably-packed Funk Box in Baltimore, for example, but I never encountered anyone unwilling to yield a little space or let you pass, much less anyone so vicious as to start 'throwing elbows', etc.

DSO has consistently played to an over-heated, packed State Theater in Virginia, but I never experienced the Gestapo tactics about space that I did, for example, at the GAMH.

I had never been to Toad's Place in New Haven until this May, but found an audience willing to go with the flow of the crowd and work with each other in the tight space. Rather than obsess about holding a few square feet (that no GA ticket buyer has any legitimate right to claim, just because they stood there for a few minutes ahead of others), I found that the New Haven crowd (like other DSO East Coasters) did not want such distractions. They wanted their focus on the music and, like many DSO East Coast audiences I have seen, would rather just make some room and dance together, for the few brief shining moments they have.

Philly's Electric Factory has regularly hosted up to nearly 1200-person (even sell-out) DSO crowds, where space was definitely limited, but I found the fans remarkably generous and un-selfish....as opposed to what I regularly find in the Tower Theater, just across town, when seeing other bands.

It is not just about the venue or even the city, but also about whether there is a high enough level of appreciation in the local crowd to not ruin something rare and special, just to hoard a piece of common ground from others.

Even in the stereotypical heart of rudeness, NYC, I have found that DSO crowds, on the whole, are much less concerned about marking their territory than I have seen in Colorado or the West Coast.

At the risk of pissing off the 'West Coasters' or the Rocky Mountain crowds, my travels with DSO around the U.S. of A. have led me to believe that many of these folks must be pretty spoiled when it comes to seeing good music. I have found, ironically, that the people who don't get to see shows as much (such as in relatively spread-out East Coast venues) tend to be less bratty and immature in enforcing nonsensical, ad hoc rules about space ownership.

I guess it comes down to this : kind, generous people act with kindness and generosity while rude, selfish people act with selfish rudeness. There is no in middle ground really.

Being thoughtful of others in a tight, crowded setting means thinking about and acting on more than just the single-minded goal of one's own good time, no matter the cost. I have found that to get a little you have to give a little.

Really it all comes down to whether we, as fans and kindred souls in the music, choose to yield a little ground, risking generosity, or instead choose to covet a little ground, guaranteeing rudeness.

If everyone considers whether others are also enjoying the show and forgets any delusions that a crowd's natural ebb and flow can be controlled to one's own benefit, I think we will all find that any place we find ourselves during the show is a nice place to be.

I attended the DSO show in Boise last night at the Big Easy, and I must say WHAT A SHOW IT WAS! Turns out it was an original set list night (problems with the bus braking down, which lead to late arrivals/therefore no planned show-but the songs they chose to play were absolutely incredible! (not to mention that even the local paper's music reporter printed that DSO would perform a specific show-hee hee hee)....anyway, I commented to more then one fan at the show that If it was the Dead thamselves who played all the songs that were played last night, then it would definitely have been one of the best Dead shows ever! What a treat for Boise fans! Thanks DSO! Come back soon! (just for good measure I bought an extra ticket-why not support a good scene?)...Some of the very special songs last night were: Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, Mr. Charlie, So Many Roads, Men Smart, Women Smarter, Lucy In The Sky, Visions of Johanna, Help On The Way, Second That Emotion, Touch of Grey and Brokedown Palace...(and that is just the highlights)...I think the music itself was right around three hours worth and it was a very satisfying show...Come on back soon DSO!!!!!

Always a big fan and we will still see DSO when they come to Colorado, But maybe not at the Fox. We were disapointed with the disrespect and rudeness we witnessed at the Fox Theater on Saturday night. We arrived at the show plenty early. (about 8:45) Got a couple beers and went to the front rail. A guy and girl were talking to each other about 10 feet apart. My wife asked if she could set her beer on the rail and the dude didn't budge an inch. He left a few minutes later to get a drink and left the 9 foot section open. I went up to lean on the rail and was hissed at that the afore mentioned dude would be right back. I said there was still plenty of room and was again hissed that they were expecting at least 10 friends. Well last time I checked it was a GENERAL ADMISSION venue. Said friends showed up and were also very rude and more than a few times heard under the breath comments. Show starts, bumps are made, (intentional) beers are spilled, we move.
More than once were we jammed out by more and more people trying to get a better view. Who the hell was that guy going "Baaa Baaaa You're all sheep!" Finally found the only place we cold enjoy the show... IN THE @%#^$*)& LOBBY

Sound was weak, sight was zero, but we had room to dance, drink and breath. Sorry for these harsh words here. We love DSO and really love the family atmosphere of the shows for the most part. But I feel that something needs to be addressed with a few of the people at some of the recent shows. Come to party and have a good time, but be decent and respectfull of the person you bump or step on or MOVE DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF. I don't want to hear that because you came from across country or that you have seen DSO 300 times that you think you deserve a better spot than some body else. Come to have a good time, but stay in control!!! Seriously, this kind of behavior is what killed the concert seen at the later DEAD shows!!!

We all need to do or part in this. By speaking up to others or being more aware of YOUR actions.

In regards to the capacity, I think I would rather see a show at Cervantes. Did anyone else think the Fox was too packed???

Still a fan.

Just wanted to say thanks to the guys and lisa for playing so hard and soo long at the fest this year. the first night was amazing, mind blowing, just to briefly describe it. donna was there, completely surprising. we wouldn't let em stop playing. there was this super sonic space jam somewhere in the 2nd set, rendered me useless, couldn't move. the second night was the mescaline show, perfect. 2 entire shows went down plus Sundays request show. holy shit it was fun. those guys are so generous. you all gotta go to nelson ledges, beautiful camping there and 3 nights of dark star. maybe someone could up the shows to the archive? anyone else have a blast? hope you all enjoyed. thanks again for the good time and we'll see you in PA soon. yeaahhh.

I've been a huge fan of DSO since they started playing Colorado many moons ago, but last night at the Fox was over the top! It was the rockingist show I've seen in a long time and Barraco on keyboards was phenomenal, driving the band to a higher level than I've ever seen them play at before! Time to quit the day job and get back on the bus!

Just got back to Denver after jaming to Dark Star till almost two, and still can feel the energy. The Fox was packed, and the band did not disapoint. They rolled through all of their hits, and played many fan favorites to which almost everyone was singing along to. The show was Nov. 24th, 1972 from Dallas, and was a great one which every dead-head must check out. Can't wait for the next two days!

My apologies for reposting but I can't edit the original. I should have included these numbers so some of you could avoid embarrassment. The Grateful Dead had 501 songs in rotation throughout their carrer. Of these 501 songs, 317 were covers. This means that 63 percent of their repertoire was covered. These numbers can be verified at http://www3.clearlight.com

Over fifty percent of their material is covered. Get over yourselves with this pitting of DSO vs. the Grateful Dead. One is the extension of the other which was an extension of many. Sadly I have to imagine that most of these people saw the image and bought into the image that became the Grateful Dead post 1985, in which case you should consider yourselves blessed to hear the music at the level which DSO performs it night after night.

Allow the title of my post to remain in your, dear readers, mind as you read my reply to the banter on this message board.

First of all, we begin with a look into my own position. As a lover of the GD, I have seen DSO a number of times. Approaching the venue at the Royal Oak Music Theater in Michigan I had a light heart about what to expect that night I ventured into their world for the first time. I was 16 years old, and had been a lover of the GD since I was in the 7th grade. Not expecting to be that impressed with a "cover band" as they were labeled by my friend who introduced me to the show that evening, we entered the venue in the middle of the Bertha opener. I was amazed at how well vocally and instrumentally the band sounded. The rest of the show was a great time; I danced, met some cool people and had a wonderful experience. It was so satisfying to hear songs that dwell in the very fiber of my being played live for me to enjoy.

Since that night I have seen DSO a number of times whenever they have come to Michigan and have been to Gratefulfest twice. (BY THE WAY YOU GUYS SHOULD COME UP TO EAST LANSING AND PLAY SOMETIME. MSU WOULD WELCOME YOU WITH OPEN ARMS)

I have opened my thoughts with a statement of my position on the music to inform you, dear readers, as of my stance to the level of my appreciation of DSO. I know many people whom LOVE DSO, people that think they are the greatest band in the world. I know people that hate DSO, people that think what they do is phony, unoriginal and lacks creativity. To be honest with you both sides of the issue make points that are true. I will choose not to venture into examples of what I FEEL are the good and bad points, I will only say that they do exist.

I make my stance in the middle of the pack. I enjoy seeing DSO; I think they are very talented musicians (let me also say that besides my love of the music, my technical knowledge of music, styles and theory in non-existent). I say this to extinguish any further debate as to the fact that I said DSO were "talented" musicians. All I know is that they sound good to me and I enjoy listening to them and the music they play.

I begin now the purpose of my post, the prior of which has been to educate you, dear readers, of the angle from which I write to you.

The music that was created by the GD begot a culture. It developed into a way of life. I have always felt that it was not the purpose of the music, but a byproduct of it. I have always felt that it was created by the phans not the music. It was centered on the music but held, within itself, a number of different purposes. Politics, schools of thought, mindsets, beliefs and ideologies thrived in this type of environment.

Over the years, at the point that I have been introduced to the music, these things have come to be the "scene" not just a byproduct of it. I think that a culture that was developed on ideals of acceptance, caring, love, understanding, freethinking and peace has become a complete caricature of itself. I feel that everything that was able to thrive in the type of environment that was created by the GD has been suffocated out by those things themselves.

Acceptance has been given a prerequisite of "as long as you are equal to my experience and my intelligence level"

Freethinking has been morphed into a collection of thoughts and ideals so genre based that the term "Freethink" has become a complete oxymoron in its description.

I have never been involved and have never been drawn to the culture that surrounds this music by any of those things. I find myself to be made an outsider by my political viewpoints, upbringing, way of thinking and overall appearance. The only thing that has ever drawn me has been the music. The music that is able to speak to me a hold me hostage like nothing else on the planet, and I think that so many of the other issues that I have spoke of have clouded the music as the main purpose of it all.

I think that nowhere has this been made clearer than on this message board. The complete lack of respect that both sides of the argument have shown to each other is unbelievable. As I said before, both sides have made great points, however they have been completely overshadowed by the lack of control you have over yourselves.

To be offended so personally by someone elses mere opinion does nothing but show a level of self-righteousness in you. Why is it so hard so accept that someone else has a different opinion than you? Sitting on this message board picking apart trivial points in each others arguments to prove that your reasons and knowledge and your opinion are superior to someone elses is the biggest form of mental masturbation that I have ever seen. Also though it has not been blatantly stated (or maybe it has) it seems that for most people involved the point of the discussion is not to further the goal of such discussion but to simply prove that "I am smarter than you, I know more about this than you, I have seen more shows than you, therefore I am right."

All of these things have taken away from the fact that this is all about the music and nothing else. You either like it or you don't. Just because you like it doesnt mean it is better than another form of music, all it means is that you like it better. I could sit here and begin to debate with you on how I think 50 cent is a more talented artist than Jerry Garcia. I could rattle off a ton of facts proving my points and you all could rebut them with facts of your own.

Case and point: opinions are backed reasons, reasons are made up off facts (whether they be personal facts or statistical. You will always have opinions, reasons and facts on both sides of any argument; they can be shaped to prove anything the author of them wants.

Let your egos subside and remember the ideals that all of this once stood for. I believe that the individual components of the culture that I mentioned before were no the whole of it. The whole of it was obviously what all those things created, TOGETHERNESS. Being able to dress, look, live, think, love, speak, read, watch, participate in, stand for, hope for, and work for whatever and however you want. And to let the music bring you together.

"Pride, Envy, Avarice-these are the sparks that have set aflame the souls of man..."

-Dante

To DSO:

When you play in Philadelphia, I have seen the band at the Electric factory on many occassions. I was wondering if you had ever looked into any other more personal type venues such as The Tower Theater in Upper Darby, which is about 25 minutes from the EF. It's a great place. The Dead/Floyd/Rolling Stones have all played there from time to time. Also, in Glenside PA, again about 25 minutes from the EF, is the Keswick Theater. Very similar to the Tower...just smaller.

I wonder how many people in the world absolutely hated the Grateful Dead and their music? Millions hated them and continue to do so, but that didn't stop me from loving their music.

I have seen the Grateful Dead 30+ times, The Dead w/Jimmy and Joan twice, The Dead w/ Jimmy and Warren twice, The Other Ones w/Mark and Steve, The Other Ones w/ and w/o Phil, The Other Ones w/Jimmy, Phil and Phriends w/ Warren and Jimmy, Ratdog dozens of times, and DSO.

I think that makes me fairly qualified to give a pretty good opinion of the band and the music they make, so let me break it down for ya. I friggin' love them and wouldn't change a thing.

Ya know, I just love Grateful Dead music, especially by a band that really knows how to play it and DSO definitley does!! If I were in any bar, club etc. in the world, and a band was playing rock and roll and decided to play a Grateful Dead tune and could do it well, then I would be a happy camper, so I don't see what the fuss is all about here.

Rob and John and the rest of DSO and the crew. Don't change a fucking thing. You bring happiness, joy, and a phat fucking groove to hundreds of thousands of people who love it, so your definitely doing something right.

Do you remember the guy in the Grateful Dead movie who is just going on and on about what a rip off it is and he is just doing it for his 10 mins. of fame? That's what this reminds me of.

Bootsy, Ramblin' Rose, and anybody else certainly have their opinion and they are entitled to it, but it's not gonna change a damned thing to people who really dig what you guy's do, so just keep truckin' on.

Thank you DSO. You make me happy to be alive.

Hello all,

The fall tour has been announced. Its to the dissapointment of the Santa Cruz community that DSO will not be playing here. Santa Cruz is a Dead community and has been for years. DSO doesnt play the west coast much. So we really look forward to the west coast tour. Last febuary DSO played here on a tuesday and the show Sold out. DSO is loved and respected by this community. It is a religious/spiritual congragation when DSO is in town.

This community is changing for the Corporate world..fast. The family here really needs what DSO keeps alive. We do our best to support DSO. All we ask is to keeep Santa Cruz in mind for the future.

love is home,
Chris

...there I was... on vacation... in Oregon... camped for a night about halfway up the Eagle Creek valley. (just above Tunnel Falls for those of you who know the area)

I had on this dye that I had bought at Nelson from a nice guy there who had some bright shiny colors. In fact, I had gone through this whole silly ritual of retiring a favorite old dye by burning it rather than letting it fall apart or sit in a drawer. The new dye was pretty cool - not a replacement, but at least covered my back.

Along comes a young couple backpacking down the trail (from Wahtum lake for those familiar...) and the guy greets me with "nice dye". I say "thanks" and mention that I got it at Nelson. Right away he wants to know how the shows were and wishes he could have made it out to Ohio. Says he just can't wait for the upcoming NW shows. We chat about the review board a little too, but not much. ;^)

That was nice. I've said it before and I'll say it again. At very least, DSO provides a valuable service of helping us connect with one another, and that is a very good thing.

Why is there no New Jersey shows on the DSO schedule. The closest show to us in Central Jersey is in upstate New York.
I recently saw a listing on the Starland Ballroom's website that the band was scheduled to appear but then it was removed. The fan base is growing for DSO in the metropolitian area. What gives?
