Is Ryan's soccer league a rec league or is it competitive?

The league Liam's in is rec. Today I got an e-mail from his coach saying that he expects the boys to run a mile after school each day. Liam is not thrilled. He already has 9 homeworks each week. Plus religion class on Monday night. And Caring Cougars at school on Tuesday. And soccer practice on Thursday. I'll admit the exercise would be good for all of us, and I'm going to make him walk with me each night for 15 minutes, but I don't want this to become an issue. His attitude is that he'd rather quit than run a mile every night.

Is this something you've seen coaches do?
