It bothers me a bit that he thinks you're making too much of a big deal about it. This is MAJOR! This is your life, your well-being, and that of your children. However, if he really does stop for good, then that's excellent.

You said you'll have to take his word that he'll stop. Is there any way you can tell when he's been smoking, like smell, excess sleeping, etc? Because he's proven in the past that his word alone isn't worth all that much.

One point to keep in mind... you say you wouldn't want to use a federal program to help you complete your education, etc, because you don't want to be a drain on the taxpayer. Think of it this way. If you get a teaching degree (or whatever) that pays well, you will a)pay back into the system that helped you, b)be there to help others, namely the children you will teach, and c)spend more $ on various things that in turn will benefit the economy.

If these programs didn't make economic sense, the government wouldn't run them.
