You reach the shoreline as the sun is setting that day. across the ocean hangs a low fog, it curls up around the shoreline as well, but doesn't tough anything beyond the sand. Your 'Escort' has to stand almost on top of you before he can see you. The surf laps at your feet, progressively moving away. It is coming onto low-tide, by the looks of things. Through the fog, there's a light.
