I'm not sure that any particular life has any more value than another. I think there are reasons to understand why Ana made the mistake she made.

What should our original band of castaways do? I mean, if they're going to live there together, don't there need to be some rules as to how we treat each other? Do they get to shoot people if they want? Jack is gonna have to deal with some tough questions. I don't think you can let Sayid go vendetta on her, but does she not have to pay some price if she is to be part of their community? Is it wrong to ask her to pay such a price simply because of her experiences the previous 48 days? Mercy is always a noble way to go. Can jack be merciful without sending Sayid out to get justice for himself?

How can we judge Ana is different from how the other characters can. They have a problem. We are simply looking at characters in fiction. The writers chose to give us a year of sympathetic characters to play against someone with half an episode of sympathy. They chose to introduce Ana the way they did at the time they did. They've shown us some reasons to understand what she did, but none really to overlook it. Ana's leadership style was, from very early on, brutal and intimidating to the others in her group. Was it effective? Maybe. I think what Ana does next will go a long way towards telling us what to think of her. I mean, I don't think anyone has any problems anymore with the savagery with which Eko greeted Sawyer and Michael originally. We understand why, and we see the kind of person Eko was before and the kind of person he is after. He cares about people and despised this violence. I don't think we know enough about Ana yet. Surely putting her up against Sayid is supposed to make us scowl at her, although frankly I, were they not all celibate on an island I wouldn't have understood Sayid's interest in Shannon in the first place.

I guess the answer is, we'll see. What Ana does next should tell us a lot.
