- Welcome Alumnae and Friends -- Charyl (), 09:07:21 03/16/07 Fri
Finally, a place just for alumnae of Camp Farwell. We have many visitors by former campers and staff each summer and even through the year who stop by and ask if we know how to contact a particular person. Making this message board may help in that regard.
Please feel welcome to post and reply and just have fun. Please tell other Farwellites you know about this board.

I check the message board regularly but hav'nt posted in a very long time! It's great to hear what everyone is up to but I have to say that I feel a bit old when I read about campers from my day, as a counselor and director, now staff and even parents (totally adorable picture of Shelby's bambinos). One thing's for sure the Farwell spirit lives on in my heart.I will never forget my time beneath the pines. I still keep in touch with 1 or 2 fellow staff in particular Lindy, the Australian water ski counselor with whom I climbed Sydney Harbour Bridge 2 years ago!!! We met up after 13 years of exchanging Christmas cards, Wedding invitations, and more lately baby gifts!! It was just like we'd seen each other yesterday. That's something for Farwell to be proud of.
Ra Ra Camp Farwell!!!!

So i was looking at camps. I found this camp i have a few questions.
What age group of girls is the camp for?
What is the price range?
Would it be a good choice for a first time camper?
thank you

Hey Farwellites-
Just an old face who enjoys reading about all the new ones that seem to love camp as much as we all did back in the day. Congratulations to Shelby on the birth of her second beautiful child. I've loved keeping in touch with all my close friends from camp over the years (Mollie Wertlieb, Quinn Rowan, Jamie Lasden, Sydney Linder, etc....) and still ache a little bit every June when I think of how much fun we all had. Shout out to Rachel Petcheksy and Carissa Spatcher--if either of you ladies are out there I'd love to hear from you!! Also hi to Bob, Charyl, Jude, Claire and the whole gang. I'm hoping to visit one summer soon.
Love always,

I miss it so much. I still keep in contact with Christine Dorr, I will have to tell her about this message board. Well, hope everyone is doing well and just think camp is right around the corner! Dear Camp Farwell- It has been quite some time since I have been on the message board or even talked to most of you in the farwell community. As most of you know I am a student at Virginia Tech, and I was overwhelmed by the amount of messages I recieved from my dear old friends at Farwell. I am ok and safe. While I wish I could get back to every single one of you, and in time I hope to do so, I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate all of your support and to please keep blacksburg in your thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Elliot was the camp director at that time. I'd love to hear from some fellow campers! Sarah Hutchison, Tibbie Uhl, Crandall Bailey, Debbie Sacken, Alison Thomas, Joy Wilcox, Nancy Greenwald, oh, gosh, I could go on and on. If any of you are out there, I'd love to hear from you!!

Hello. I was a counsellor in 1995 (sailing/swimming). Long time ago now, but I still have great, happy memories of my time at Camp Farwell. I'm now a Park Ranger in Australia & still loving the great outdoors.Nice to hear Charyl & Bob are well. I recognise quite a few of the names here & encourage former staff & campers of my era to post. So happy to hear that new generations continue to enjoy the friendly surrounds of Farwell. Yours, with happy memories, Bernie.

Looked up Farwell on a whim after talking to a granddaughter about the camp she's headed for in North Carolina (home of Farwell's founder and management until the l940's). I was a camper in 1945 and '46, and so was my cousin Allene Hoffman ('47, too). And our mothers, Rachel and Harriet Clarke (of Washington, D.C.) were once-upon-a-time campers, too.
So wha'd'ya think of that, babies?

I wish I could have joined you for more than one summer. Now I'm sitting at home preparing my lesson for the next week and watching my new puppy, Sam (Australian Shepherd). He's so cute but if you don't watch carefully he'll destroy everything ;).

- Time Capsule -- Christina (Chris Weiss) Terranova '76-?'81, 21:06:09 07/11/07 Wed
It was very surreal dropping my 10 year old daughter off on July 1st to the very same cabin I was in (Sapbucket). So many memories came flooding back! I remember the shock of hearing horsehooves running through camp early on July 4, 1976 and being totally amazed at what we saw out of our screen windows! Since MJ and I had taken a plane to camp we had to be picked up by Mr. Mallette and I of course could not believe the Massachusetts accent since all I knew was a New york accent. I distinctly remember giggling over his pronunciation of 'hosses'. Speaking of horses I remember the awesome trailrides and the overnights we took on that mountain where someone had to keep watch all night long so we wouldn't be stampeded by the horses! And having to fetch water with a bucket: so Laura Ingalls and so much fun. I still keep in touch with our amazing camp counselor Joyce Kramer (fellow Long islander) and many of the girls that came along with us to camp over the years (MJ and Mimi Paisley, Liz Sutton, Liz Kennelly, the Sullivan girls) I am so happy that Olivia is up at Farwell to enjoy the happy times I had up there. It truly is a time capsule of great memories for me! I wish I could remember exactly when I stopped going there..I think I took a year off and then was a counselor for a year but my memory is hazy. I just remember loving it up there. Hello Cinder if you're out there!

I remember the lead up to Horace Bailey so well, I thought because of all the american accents that it was Horse Bailey!
Imagine my suprise when horses had nothing to do with it!
Hope you are all well.

It's been a while since I was camp, and lately I've been thinking about it so much and how I miss the people, the traditions, and the whole environment. There's really no place like it. So i just wanted to say hello, and that I'm thinking of all of you. I've kept in touch with a some people but I'm also wondering who's still there. I was looking at some of the pictures and it was exciting to see some familar faces in the campers. I was recently contacted by 2 of my campers from when I was a CIT (Emily and Kaitlin), I can't believe they're CITs now.
Anyway, I want to come back to Farwell soon! I miss it too much.
I hope this summer's been great.
Love,

Farwell neighbor, David Kazan, stopped by and chatted about the 52 page collection of information and photos he has put together, The Mystery of Julia Farwell, with interesting photos of the girls of Farwell and the camp in the early years. Julia Farwell was an active, independent lady in a time when that lifestyle wasn't easy or taken for granted.
He generously gave a copy to the camp and to the Newbury Library among others.
It may be featured in Vermont Life Magazine summer 2009.

Are there former campers reading here who remember even earlier days?

have just googled camp farwell after all these years. Seems a lifetime ago now. I was a gymnastic counselor from England and had a fantastic summer at Camp Farwell. Have lost touch a long time ago with friends made from England but have thought often of Camp Farwell over the years. I was offered a job as Nanny by Sunny Griffin but unfortunately never came about. Am now 43 married with three boys and hope they go on and have a similar experience as I did. I expect that there is nobody at camp i would know now apart from Bob and Charyl.
Hope you all have a great summer.

Well it's that time of year. I think about camp regularly but come June the heart strings are well and truly tugged!!!! When one looks back in life people always say never go back it's never the same but something tells me certain aspects of Farwell never will change. I look back with such fondness and am so grateful for the opportunities provided even as a member of staff. Thanks to the internet I have made contact with many people (campers and staff) from the good old days and love to hear what they are up to. It's amazing to see how life has led them all down different paths.
I have just had a look at the article in VT Life and it only confirms that Bob And Charyl are such great people.
Anyway less of the sentimentality and to anyone going through those gates this summer have a blast, and please give a tiny thought to all those who have gone before you. Am off now to dig out old video year books, and probably shed a tear. "I'm Farwell born............"

Elizabeth was Blue Team Captain.
At least one of them did it all - camper, CIT, JC and Counselor.

They found many things about Farwell that hadn't changed. The changes, they said, appeared to them to be for the better.

My sisters and I went to Farwell in the 60's and I sent my daughter Elise (House) in the late 80's early 90's. This past weekend sister Mary and I plus Susan and Kate Greenwald decided to visit Farwell as well as West Newbury where "Bean Supper" used to be held and Tucker's Mtn, where we had overnights. We had a wonderful time talking with Bob and Sharyl Hanson as well as several campers and directors. We even spent some time with Jim Feloney who summers next door to Farwell in a lake house he put together with two cabins from camp: "Hunter's Lodge" and possibly "Pell Mell" or "Little Dipper"? What a great trip down memory lane. I want to send this site to a few other alum in hopes of finding more 60's campers. BTW, Mary and I now live in Bethlehem, CT but were from Bronxville, NY when we attended Farwell. Thanks to all at camp that made our day such fun: Becca, Shelby, Sharyl, Bob and two very cute CIT's whose names I didn't catch.

- Farwell 1968-1977 -- Debbie Sacken, 21:01:13 08/27/08 Wed
I have many happy memories at Farwell as a camper, JC, and Counselor. I just got a "blast from the past" letter from Allison Thomas and Carolyn Crimi. I went right to the computer to check out this message board. I'm thrilled to see many familiar names on the board. Many thanks to Allison and Carolyn for contacting me and others. I now live in Palo Alto, California with my husband and 3 kids. My younger sister, Diane Sacken, lives in New York City. Kristen Dale was my classmate at Williams College. I haven't heard from anyone else since Farwell days. Allison lives in the Bay Area. Anyone else around?

- Farwell '44 to '45 -- Sylvia, 16:43:10 09/05/08 Fri
Valri Philpott Sandoe had her memories of Farwell but thought the camp probably no longer existed. Then she read an article in Vermont Life and decided to visit.
Valri lives in Indianapolis now as she did when she was a camper. She remembers Lolly Kackley who was a camper from Florida but who now also lives in Indianapolis.
She remembers M.C. Schwartz as a camper and Rebecca Kern as a Director maybe, anyway Rebecca was more than a counselor, Valri says.
Rebecca, like Lolly, also moved to Indianapolis.
Valri remembers that she was in the cabin farthest from the Pari's and she was little.
In Valri's day they didn't have bunks and chests like the current furnishings in the cabin, she told us.
She didn't look for her name on the cabin wall because she
said she doesn't think she put it there.
It was a nice visit on a sunny end - of - summer day, quite warm walking around camp.
The warm temperatures may have triggered the memory of the long train ride to camp in the summer heat and soot blowing in when Valri opened the train car window.
Some things have changed more than Camp Farwell.
Hope to see you here on the alumnae board, Valri

- Camper, Counselor—1956-61 -- JoAnne Smith Deitch (Think of you all often), 12:50:06 05/02/09 Sat
Sure glad to find you on the internet. Think of the Furlongs, Elliots, the Hansons, and Hunts as well as my camp-mates and co-counselors (and Effie's great Southern cooking.) Especially would love to hear about Anne K. Morris from Salisbury, MD and Jenny Berg from VT. (Her family owned a place on Halls Lake, and we used to sneak down there every once in a while.)
I remember some of the alumnae who've posted messages - like Katie Greenwald.
I was on the White Team and we won almost every year I was there. I did go back to visit one winter, and it was great to be back...although no one was around.
My daughter went there for 1 month in 1975, but she was a bit too young to be away from home at the time. My mistake! Now I'm waiting for my granddaughter to be 7 before I tell her all about Farwell. Good to be back in touch, Farwell Born and Bred, JoAnne Smith Deitch

- We had to say good-bye... -- Sylvia, 13:39:47 08/14/09 Fri
... to Catriona, Gregor and Duncan today.
We will miss having them on our summer scene. Busy Catriona who made it hard to believe it has been years since she was here before this summer.
Gregor and Duncan being boys, playing comic strip heroes and other macho games with Spencer and enjoying cooling off in the water at the wind-surfing dock.
But alas, Catriona has a day job educating youngsters in Scotland.
We miss you.
We hope to see you soon again.

- Good-bye, Kate -- Sylvia, 16:30:34 09/06/09 Sun
Today we said good-bye to Kate P, for whom the word "support"
in Support Staff is a good description.
Kate is from Russia and spent days on a train from her home to a city with an airport for her flight to the US and her Camp Farwell destination for six summers and then made the long journey home again.
Kate has graduated University and her new life in Leningrad will likely not spare her to return to Farwell except, she says, maybe for a visit someday.
We will miss you, Kate. It's good to know you.

Nikki says she spent most of her time in the pavilion where she fell in love with art. She majored in art in college.

I happened to visit last fall after hiking in the Whites on vacation. It is under a new name, but boy did it bring back memories! And it was great to see it still there. Things have changed a bit. I took pictures. Maybe I can upload them here sometime. I have wondered if I would ever cross paths with any of you.

- "Farwell Spirit 1960s"... a sharing of memories ... -- Marley, 12:55:48 06/12/11 Sun
Hello Farwell Friends!
Recently, a new Facebook group called "Farwell Spirit 1960s" was created by an alum from the 60's. I was delightfully surprised to watch the number of members grow from three to seven to now eighteen in a matter of days! There are many Farwell Facebook groups out there which reflect friendship and happy memories of summers past and present. However, this group now stands out in my mind as representing the quintessential "Farwell Spirit" as the group was so perfectly named.
I soon began to daydream of Candle Light: my favorite Farwell tradition where the entire camp community stands together for the last time in the friendship circle up at the cook out field; poems are read, songs are sung, and we each light our own candle from one flame. We are in darkness, but for the blazing fire we surround. As the flame is passed from Farwellite to Farwellite, my gaze is always focused on watching the dark silhouettes of strangers transform into glowing friendly faces which I have held dear all summer.
The "Farwell Spirit 1960s" Facebook group is like the Candle Light flame, lighting up the faces of Farwellites from around the world who were once only silhouettes in our memories.
Hugs,
Marley

...held its last dinner in 1927, going from cottage to cottage around Hall's Lake enjoying a marathon of dining which ended at Camp Farwell.
Miss Arbutus Saunders was the recreation director at Camp Farwell then.
The Fat Mens' toast
A toast to us, my good friends,
To bless the things we eat,
It has been full many a year
since we have seen our feet.
But who would lose a precious pound,
By trading sweets for sours,
It takes a mighty girth indeed,
To hold such hearts as ours.
Some of the members of the Fat Men's Club:
Mayors, legislators, governors, William Jennings Bryan.
William Howard Taft was invited but couldn't show preference, however he did visit the area. It is rumored that Teddy Roosevelt attended FMC meetings from time to time while hunting in the area.

July 6, 1992
Today I woke up to the sun shining and birds chirping. That was nice because our last few days here have been cloudy and raining. Breakfast was normal except today I had to be sweeper.
Our new schedule is up. I have riding, arts and crafts, archery, tennis, and aerobics.
Cabin clean-up was hard, because we had to sweep all of the mud that was left, and after all that work, we only got
11 1/2. [Wishing Well had an under average score for being eligible for ice cream.]
I was thrilled to find that I got a lot of mail and packages. During quiet time I wrote letters.
At evening activity, it was Blues vs. Whites in a game of Pictionary. The Blues won by one point - oh, well!
[The day ends with closure]
I like closure because we get to thank people for things when we might not otherwise do it.
I greatly enjoyed writing this page to show my day. I'm glad it was a great one!

Liz Dunn, CIT
Today we went to Whales Tale. It turned out to be a great trip.
Nobody else seemed to know about this [the Amusement] side of Whale's Tale. For $2 [my friends and I] had the rides all to ourselves.
As it warmed up, we went on water slides and in the wave pool. Sarah convinced me to go down the speed slides. I regretted it as I was plummeting to the bottom.
I ate a ton of food, pizza, milkshake, fried dough...
After the bumpy ride home, I was not particularly psyched
when my cabin reminded me that we were scheduled to go on an overnight to Tucker's Mt. that night. However, it turned out to be really fun - sleeping under the stars, eating s'mores, fresh picked raspberries, blueberries.
All in all it was a great day.

Today was a good and neat day. The video man came and took video pictures of the camp for the video yearbook. Our cabin was on a sailboat and we each jumped off and said our name and where we are from. It was cool!
Other cabins did different things. One cabin was on the roof and another cabin was on the rafters.
It was a pretty CRAZY day!

Today was Arena Day. The activities were all Blue/White competitions. I did a lot of running in the games we played.
I had a great time.
Just before second free dip, Katie promised to be my swimming buddy, but when she went to her cabin to put away her hair brush, she forgot that she was going to be my buddy for free dip, and she went to another cabin so someone could do her hair. I got really mad at her, but then we made up again. It's fun having friends like Katie at camp.

Today was very rainy! We had a major thunderstorm. About twenty people were in our cabin. Whenever thunder sounded, we all screamed. I tried to go to sleep, but everyone kept on screaming, yelling, and talking.
Instead of a cook-out we had a cook-in. We had hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, salad, watermelon, fruit punch, veggies, and dip. After dinner, we sang songs with the seniors, because the CIT's were White Water Rafting.
I also got my lion in long distance swimming.

Today we found out our schedules. I'm very excited about archery and clowning because I've never had those classes before. Today, also, the people from ACA came to inspect camp.
Evening activity was counselor hide-and-seek. The counselors hide and make animal noises, and campers find them and they give you their signature. The day ended with a barnyard and soda march. The best part of the day was clowing because of the creative things we did.

Today I woke up at the second bell, and although I was almost late for breakfast, I Just made it on time.
The weather today is fairly sunny and warm. I went through my normal activities of riding, softball, and rehearsal for "Grease".
The thought for the day, by Alexis, really makes me think of all the great friends I've made at Camp Farwell, and I feel really close with my friends today. Everyone worked so hard to make me and all the other campers feel so welcome, and it made a big difference, and I want to acknowledge that.
Even though I am sad to be leaving camp in four days, I'm excited about "Parents' Day" because I'll see my family. Today is a day with a lot of mixed emotions: sadness to leave my friends who are so sweet; excitement at seeing my parents and sister; and happiness that I had such a wonderful experience at Camp.

Today the killer game began. You can [use] electrocution {touching with electrical cord], poisoning with rainsins, or by singing A Pizza Hut while trapping a victim in an enclosed area. So far ten people remain [free].
Also, today we were given our parts in the clown show for parents’ weekend. I think it will be a very good performance due to the help of a professional clown who came to teach us.
During fourth period, Cristina Merry del Val and I played tennis against Chris and Juliet. I think if we had been allowed to finish, we would have won.
As this session comes to an end, I look back on all the memorable times with a big smile. I hope future years will be just as exciting.

We headed for Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory. We had a taste of Brownie Nut Fudge which they were making that day. Then McDonald's for lunch then off to the Alpine Slides in Stowe.
The trip home was quiet. We moved into our cabins and settled in. We all missed our friends but we waited for the new arrivals,
After dinner, we watched "Curley Sue" and I looked after Marley and Charlsie. At 11:30 when I went back to my cabin,
I could hear the counselors singing while cleaning up from the staff dinner.
The girls from Mexico arrived about 12:30 but I was still up and hyper. The day went well with some sad moments, but it was a good ending to the first session.

Sara Harris, CIT
When a new camper arrives who is assigned to our cabin, we meet her in the living room to get her registered. I know two of the new campers from last year.
After everybody arrived and got settled in, we got to know each other.
Then we gathered to meet all the CIT's who taught or reviewed campfire songs.
While the new campers were being tested in swimming, riding, and tennis, I helped Mary, the nurse, with health checks.
Finally we had the campfire. The day went well.

- From the Perspective of: Carmen Larios -- Sylvia, 10:32:50 07/27/12 Fri
Arts and Crafts Counselor, Mexico City
Today was the first day of second session, and at the beginning, I thought it was not going to be that much fun, because it seemed as if camp turned into a small group. Then as the day went by, I realized how nice it is to have small groups in arts and crafts. In the beginning the girls hardly talked which felt weird, because I was used to all the noise and chattering. After second period I taught volleyball which was the first time I did it. It was fun even though it got really hot. After our game all we wanted was to jump in the lake. All the girls did a great job in their volleyball lesson, and of course, Laura and Carmen, the amazing counselors, did a great job, too. When this class was over, I went swimming in the lake. It was great! I think I had as good a time as the kids, going on the slide and in the tube.
After free dip we had lunch. This was my first day on the vegetarian menu which I thought was pretty good.!
Three more periods of arts and crafts and it was dinner time. Then evening activities which was learning old songs. The kids seemed to enjoy singing.
When evening activities end, it's time to go to bed. That means it's time to chase the girls to take showers, etc. This time it wasn't hard.
As soon as the third bell rang, we all ran to closure. We had a guest, "Famous Debbie", the best letter writer in the world. She broke records writing 79 letters to Bruce in one month.
When all the girls were in bed, we had a staff meeting to discuss days off and other matters before we went to bed.
Before going to sleep I realized it had been a great day looking at familiar faces and all the new ones, almost all of them wearing a big smile.

Today was an exceptionally funny day. Everyone was in the giggle mood. Everything seemed to be funny. My private riding lesson is neat-o, and I have a really nice teacher. Today I was able to get Moose, the horse, to canter. I even did it without stirrups!
Evening activity was so much fun. My favorite game was the huggy one. I think people who didn't know each other well got to know each other better.
Camp is really cool this year. It's only the second day and I love it.

- Excerpts from the Perspective of: Karen Deighton -- Sylvia, 14:18:14 07/29/12 Sun
After getting up with high spirits at 4:30 a.m. to leave camp at 5:00, we, the B team ended up leaving 20 minutes later. The drive to Montreal was quiet, as we all lay down with our pillows blowing out the zzzzz's. At Rock Island, we were all shuffled to have another stamp on our passports.
The first stop was changing our money.
The B team had lost Augusti again. Not to worry!
We set off seeing swish shopping areas and watching very image-conscious fashion people walking around for the pose, and feeling incredibly scruffy myself. We were hungry, so we piled into the famous Hard Rock Cafe, where we were observed and passports checked. The meal was good and very filling. Then came the dreaded bill to be sorted which probably took as much time as eating the meal.
[From] the modern side of Montreal, we bravely ventured to the old side of town, and there stood before us the Notre Dame Basilica. What an impressive building!
[Leaving] the cathedral feeling peaceful and relaxed, six of us jumped onto a horse and trap and lazily continued to Montreal. We then wandered down to the flea market where Becky found her bargain shirt which she so proudly wore.
[Then] we all crashed on the grass for an afternoon kip.
We headed to McDonald's, gulped down our food and rushed to meet Bob, our trusty driver.
And to finish such a perfect day, Augusti was even on time, meeting us at the bus.

- From Mitzi Queen's West Newbury Column - Journal Opinion, Aug. 22, 2012 -- Sylvia, 11:57:59 08/24/12 Fri
"Twenty Camp Farwell alumnae from the 1960s recently spent several days in the area. They visited the Camp to speak to
and sing with the present campers. Three were still here on August 16 when I met with them at a neighboring cottage. I took them the booklet, 'The Story of Julia Farwell, Founder of Camp Farwell' written by David Kazen who has a cottage on the lake. I was especially interested to hear about their memory of walking through the woods on the eastern shore of the lake to the West Newbury Hall to attend the Bean Supper. They would return on Halls Lake Road singing all the way. There are 40 members of the Camp Farwell Alumnae Association and some plan to return again next year."
