Subject: Showline vs. working GSD - Breeding analysis

Prepared by Laura Sanborn:
_______________________________

My analysis and data so far in this thread have been for working line
GSDs. I do have some data on German showline GSDs, which suggest
continuing inbreeding and loss of population genetic diversity due to
selection for the narrowly defined showdog "type" which became popular over
the past 30 years. This has occurred even during the period of time post
1970 when these practices have been much less common in working line GSD
breeding.

I thought it interesting to compare linebreeding in top performing working
line GSDs and top German showline GSDs
This shows the low level of linebreeding among the top 10 placing dogs in
the 2002 BSP (German schutzhund national championship for GSDs).

pl..Dog's Name........................10 gen COI....linebreeding
1.. Anosch vom Adelmannsfelder Land..... 2.5%.......... 5-5
2.. Quaste von Ankenrütt................ 2.6%.......... none
3.. Kalle vom Welzbachtal............... 2.8%.......... 5-5
4.. Lana vom Randegger Schloß........... 2.8%.......... 5-5
5.. Kondor vom Flughafenrand............ 2.7%.......... none
6.. Eddy vom Adelmannsfelder Land....... 1.8%.......... none
7.. Basko vom Vorderlintal.............. 2.2%...........none
8.. Eeyh vom Aesculap................... 3.4%....... 4-4,4 5-5
9.. Max vom Preußenstein................ 2.3%.......... none
10..Ukas von der Heidenschanze.......... 2.6%.......... none

For comparison purposes, here are the top 10 dogs (working male class) in
the 2002 BSZS, the German (National Conformation) Sieger Show for
GSDs. I've included their 10 generation COI. Rather than list the tedious
5 generation linebreedings in these dogs (there's a lot)... which really
doesn't capture the fact that those dogs are in turn linebred on the same
small list of other dogs... I've instead included the main sources of
inbreeding within the first 10 generations...in descending order of their
contribution, from left to right:

pl ..Dog's Name...10 gen COI main contributors to 10 gen inbreeding
1 Yasko Farbenspiel.. 12.0%.. Cello, Palme, Odin, Xaver, Uran, Canto, Quanto
2 Untox Ducati........ 7.2%.. Palme, Uran, Canto, Quanto, Fedor, Quando, Xaver
3 Esko DÃnischen Hof.. 8.2%.. Uran, Palme, Mark, Canto, Quanto, Wilma, Xaver
4 Mack Aducht......... 7.0%.. Quanto, Uran, Palme, Canto, Lasso, Flora, Wilma
5 Kevin Murrtal....... 7.6%.. Palme, Quanto, Fedor, Canto, Uran, Odin, Quina
6 Bax LuisenstraÃsse.. 9.1%.. Quanto, Palme, Cello, Fedor, Uran, Canto, Wilma
7 Ghandi Arlett....... 9.0%.. Palme, Zilli, Cello, Uran, Quanto, Lasso, Canto
8 Hill Farbenspiel.... 7.5%.. Cello, Canto, Palme, Quanto, Uran, Xaver, Lasso
9 Larus Batu......... 10.4%.. Palme, Zamb, Cello, Odin, Jeck, Uran, Xaver
10 Orbit Tronje....... 6.0%.. Uran, Quanto, Canto, Palme, Mark, Lasso, Wilma

Major points when comparing the showdog BSZS list to the working line BSP list

1) The 10 generation COI for the top BSZS dogs is higher, averaging 8.4%,
compared to the top BSP dogs which averages just 2.6%. Top showdogs are
more inbred than the top working line dogs. There isn't even any
overlap... the least inbred top 10 BSZS dog has more inbreeding (6.0%) than
the most inbred top 10 BSP dog (3.4%). However, I believe that the top
BSZS showdogs are significantly less inbred than the showlines of many
other breeds... breeds where, unlike all GSDs in Germany, there is no
working performance test at all.

2) It's mostly the same dogs that the top showline GSDs have all been
inbred on... Canto, Uran, Palme, Quanto, Quando, Cello, Odin, Xaver, Lasso,
Fedor. The heavy use among the German showlines (the most numerous GSD
population worldwide) of a small number of dogs is what narrows genetic
diversity in the breed. This is more worrisome IMO than the linebreeding.

3) Another way to look at this is the number of unique dogs in these
subpopulations. The 10 generation pedigrees of the top 10 BSP performance
dogs has 2893 unique dogs. But the 10 generation pedigrees of the top 10
BSZS showdogs has just 1638 unique dogs. The BSP dogs represent a more
genetically diverse population.

My analysis suggests that working line GSD mean full pedigree COI increased
the most not around 1950 or around 1970 but rather between 1899 and about
1930. http://www.esc-registry.org/private/ESregistryWeb/LodiCOI.htm

This corresponds to very heavy use of certain dogs to create physical
"type" during the formation of the breed. This can also be shown by an
analysis of the dogs with the heaviest genetic contribution in pedigrees...
the highest "percentage contribution" or "%blood". For the working line
GSD example I've used, this shows the skewed and high genetic contribution
of dogs who were born in the earliest years of the breed.

BTW, the "larger type" post 1950 would be descendents of Rolf vom
Osnabrücker Land, shown above at less than 8% genetic contribution. He is
apparently not as important in pedigrees as some give him credit, and
cannot begin to compete with the influence of the dogs from the early years
of the breed.

The lucrative "market" for SV dogs will not tolerate crossings to other
breeds. They are selling a "pure" product. There is WAY too much money
involved now for the SV to put working abilities first, let alone to
compromise the marketability of their "pure" product with crossings.

IMO the most likely venue will be via a
(not yet existing) GSD working dog organization that would need to be
separate from the SV and separate from the FCI. Something analogous to
the NVBK in Belgium, which split off from the FCI national kennel club
associated malinois club. Since the SV hierarchy seems determined to kick
Helmut Raiser out as SV National Breed Warden before he has any opportunity
to turn things around, perhaps he can be the "new von Stephanitz" to found
this new organization.

I'm aware that other dog populations are much more heavily inbred and
suffer as a result. It does not follow from this that working line GSDs or
ISDS BCs, with their lower mean COIs, suffers inbreeding depression, .

There were close to 600-700 founders in the GSD breed. But the heavy use
of some at the near total exclusion of others in the earliest years of the
breed severely narrowed the contribution that most of these dogs could
*ever* make.

Statistically...
50% of the genes in the example working line GSD pedigree come from just 8
foundation dogs
75% of the genes in the example working line GSD pedigree come from 18
foundation dogs
90% of the genes in the example working line GSD pedigree come from 49
foundation dogs
95% of the genes in the example working line GSD pedigree come from 79
foundation dogs

Looking simply at the statistical analysis that pedigrees can show, I think
you'll find that no GSD alive today has significantly more or less of the
rare founders in their pedigrees than do other GSDs. That's what I found
when I traced back some representative German working line, German
showline, German herding line, and AKC line GSDs back to founders.

Rather than use a statistical pedigree analysis to try to locate rare
founder genes, one can instead simply assess the dogs living today. Genes
and genetic combinations worth saving for a working dog breeding program
can be found in those dogs who retain breed working abilities.
