I'm with you all the way here... That's why I have SUCH a problem with people breeding as young as 14 mos of age... This breed matures slowly and to even begin to think you can see what temperment the dog has and will have solidly and what will be passed on to future generations is rediculous. I think peope HAVE GOT to wait till the dog (both male and female) are two years old...or even older for working prospects. I see my male Boerboel at 18 mos. old (or close to it) and only recently have I really been able to see what kind of ADULT dog he is and what kinds of traits he will pass on...It's crazy to think you can see that in a dog at less than 2 years of age...no matter how experienced you are.

I also think that besides changing how acceptable it is to breed young dogs but it's also important to get these dogs working. I'm all for breeders giving dogs away to owners who will let them retain their breeding rights and WORK the dog. So many breeders out there either don't have the means to work the dog or the time or desire...but if you're going to breed...have someone else work your dogs. They need to be proven and I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who are willing to work your dogs, let you keep them in YOUR breeding program etc....IF they turn out.

Buyers need to be better informed and need to also look at what they are supporting. Even if they're not breeding there are buyers out there who will look at all parts of the dog they hope to purchase. Registries need to be buyer friendly by getting more dogs out there without health problems. Soooo many people I know have sworn off Mastiff breeds in general because of their health. So many people get heartbroken many times and end up just throwing in the towel.

Breeders and buyers as well as registries need to take initiative and need to work to IMPROVE these guys... More litters and breeding young dogs is NOT the way to do it. THAT trend needs to stop.
