Subject: The Portman Class (Part One)

the portman class

What's wrong with Natalie Portman?

You know, that young actress who portrayed Queen Amidala in Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.

That cutie who was discovered at age 11 by Revlon and acted in the hit movie the very next year, holding her own against veterans Jean Reno and Gary Old man in The Professional.

The very same babe with an A-list circle of celebrity friends - Liv Tyler, Susan Sarandon, Ashley Judd, Isaac Mizarhi and Moby - just to name a few.

So, why's this teenager not the usual self-promoting, self-important nymphet clamouring for publicity? Instead, she's a normal girl with her head firmly screwed to her delicate shoulders.

Could it be that Portman loathes her celebrity status?

"It makes me feel bad, like no one recognises I have my own world going on outside their part of my world, that I have a life of my own," she told Marie Claire. "I feel how intrusive it is when people come into my life, even when they are famous. It's so weird when someone thinks that because they're famous and you're famous, they can call you or hug you when they see you. Not to be rude, but if I don't know you, I'm not going to be your best friend on our first meeting."

Despite her short resume, Harpers And Queen commented that "this cutie had more acting ability in her little toe than Demi Moore and Jennifer Aniston combined." Compliments indeed.

In fact, Portman chooses only positive movie characters, as she recognises her role model status for other teenaged girls. She turned down the lead role in Romeo + Juliet because of certain objectionable scenes and the age difference between her an Leonardo Dicaprio. And the role of Wendy in Lee Ang's The Ice Storm because she felt the material was "too dark". She also rejected the title role of Adrian Lyne's Lolita because: "I don't think there needs to be a movie out there where a child has sex with an adult. I think there's enough exploitation out there, that it's not necessary to do more."
