Subject: The Portman Class (Part Two)

She originally turned down the role of Ann August in Anywhere But Here due to a nude love scene, but co-star Susan Sarandon stepped in and threatened to leave if the script wasn't re-written. Portman accepted the new version and received a Golden Globe nomination for it.

Clearly, this is one tough cookie. But then, it's no secret that Portman's trademark characters are girls who are smart and mature for their age. A case of art imitating life? Well, as she told Marie Claire,"I'm grateful that my first experience of cinema was in an European art film. It shaped my view of what films should be -- beauty and honesty -- whereas so many people make their choices governed by the box office."

And she's been fastidious about her roles. After The Professional, there was Heat and Developing. Then, she stole the show in Beautiful Girls from stars Mira Sorvino and Uma Thurman, playing a wickedly funny and wise-beyond-her-years girl. She followed up with roles in Everyone Says I Love You, Mars Attack!, The Phantom Menace, Anywhere But Here and Where the Heart Is. She recently finished filming Star Wars: Episode II, which will be released next year.

Sarandon has a theory about Portman's real-life maturity: "She's really a smart girl who has had very rarefied upbringing, who has been raised with a lot of confidence and self-esteem, so she seems older than she is in many ways. I felt at all times that I was working with an equal. She has a natural grace that doesn't make her seem as if she's of her generation."
