Shantal sat on the huge silk pillows beside the window, the view of the beautiful garden forgotten as she tried to calm her fears. Her gaze strayed once again toward the silk covered canopy bed where Michael rested unmoving.
The door opened and Gadari entered slowly.
“How is he Lalla?”
Shantal shrugged. Her fingers softly pushed a stray curl off her forehead as she gazed lovingly at Michael’s peaceful countenance.
“He hasn’t moved since this morning when he arrived. He whimpers and moans but does not wake up Gadari!” She stated hoarsely.
Gadari knelt beside the bed, his fingers gently brushed Michael's naked chest seeking the normal life signs. He pressed softly against Michael’s left nipple and smiled as he felt the soft pattering of Michael’s heartbeat. Slow, steady.
“But he was returned to you at six and it is.....almost seven in the evening!" His gaze roamed Michael's features. "He seems to sleep quite deeply Shantal, what did you give him?”
Shantal stood and ambulated toward the bed. “Nothing, absolutely nothing since four am.”
Gadari sighed. “Then why is he so unresponsive?”
Shantal took a seat beside Michael, taking his limp hand in hers she sighed and stared deeply into Gadari’s dark gaze. “I don’t know, but I’m scared.”
Gadari shook his head. “What did you give him?”
Shantal took a deep breath and exhaled softly. “Before he was taken to Rahine?"
He nodded.
"Onnia’s hallucinogen, I should have given him the second jug of Onnia’s mixture, but I haven’t had the heart to disturb his sleep. He looks so peaceful and serene.”
Gadari smiled softly. “How long will you wait?”
Shantal shrugged. “A couple of more hours, if he doesn’t wake up by nine this evening then I’ll seek Onnia once again.”
Gadari sighed. “She’s gone.” He stated softly, standing he walked to the door.
Shantal lifted her dark gaze to stare deeply into Gadari’s own. “What do you mean she’s gone?”
Gadari opened the door. “Just what I said, she left this morning.” He stated before crossing the threshold and closing the door softly.
Shantal sighed, slowly leaning over Michael she placed a soft kiss upon his brow and brushed the curls that had softly fallen over his eyes. She stood and returned
to her pillows beside the window.

Michael frowned. He felt a soft, cold breeze brush over his skin and shivered softly. He slowly began to drift back to consciousness from the darkness where he had resided for several hours. Shivering at the darkness that met his tired gaze as he opened his eyes, he searched the room. Not seeing any light except a soft ray of moonlight that softly crossed the room to settle near the foot of the bed. That’s when he felt the hairy bodies first. Then the prick of their tiny, sharp jaws. They plunged down onto him in the darkness, tracing restless paths over his unshielded skin.
“Please, someone......” he whispered.
Another probing shape hit his leg, and he wrenched his body into a tight ball.
“Anyone!”
The darkness wrapped itself around him, dense, taut, enveloping him, stretching to shut out all sound. He felt the insects THERE too. In the tunnels below section,
where Madeline had locked him up once she tired of his rebelliousness.
He jumped as the tiny fangs pierced his skin; their sharp legs clamored over his bare arms. Through his hair, inside his ears, upon his eyelids.
“No More!” The cry exploded from the darkness, ragged and terrified. His own cry, Michael realized dimly.
His fingers curled like talons as he flayed wildly at himself, trying to wrench the insects away from him. The spiders were everywhere now, an angry, relentless swarm.
“No Please....”
And then he began to scream.
Shantal jumped off the pillows at the pain filled scream. Darkness enveloped her as she slowly made her way toward the bed side table to light the lamp.
Bumping into something solid that scurried away from her, she gasped and hurried toward the bed. Turning the lamp on she gasped as the brightness of the room showed her the bed was empty.
Her gaze roamed the room quickly, searching for Michael, hoping that Rahine had not taken him away again while she slept. Then suddenly she saw him. Wedged tightly against a far corner of the room, his body curled into a protective ball. But it was the queer, soft humming that caught her attention and made her rush toward him.
As she watched, he began to rock back and forth, his hands locked around his bent knees. His eyes, she saw were huge and haunted; as she strode closer they stared at her, unblinking, passing right through her.
“Michael get up.” She ordered grimly.
The rocking did not stop, nor the odd, wordless melody.
Shantal knelt before him, reaching out she gently cupped her hand over Michael’s cheek, her thumb gently brushing back and forth hoping to make him react.
She looked into his eyes, surprised when they registered no change at her presence. Muttering a curse she didn’t even remember, she reached out and clasped her hands over Michael’s biceps and pulled him toward her.
His body was an unresisting weight that settled against her, his head fell limply against her shoulder. “Look at me Michael!” She ordered harshly.
The soft humming stopped, she could feel his breath, jerky and light against her neck. “Michael please answer me, you’re scaring me.” She gently pushed Michael’s head to the side until she could gaze into his pale features. Some spark of emotion flickered deep inside his Jade green eyes, then disappeared. Silently he shrank back from her embrace, his eyes blind with pain.
Then his hands began to quiver. He twisted, straining to brush something off his shoulder. Something that Shantal could not see.
“No.....No More!” He stammered. “Dear god make them g...go away.” he raised his eyes, searching but seeing nothing of what was around him. Michael was lost in another world.
“Make what go away?” She asked softly.
Michael’s Jade eyes lifted and stared deeply into hers. “The sp...spiders! Please! Can’t you see them?” he asked incredulous as his trembling fingers attacked the
empty air before him.
Shantal closed her eyes. “There are no spiders Michael.” She stated.
“All.....over me!” He gasped, struggling desperately.
Shantal reached out and gently placed her hand on his cheek. “Michael, come back to me please.” She whispered as her thumb gently brushed his skin.
She watched Michael close his eyes and shiver convulsively. filled with fear she surrounded Michael with her arms and gently pulled him against her.
Michael stiffened against her, he began to fight her wildly, his fingers clawing at her hair and back. She looked down, feeling her heart tear at the glazed look in
Michael’s eyes.
“Shhhhh. Michael don’t fight me, I only want to help you.” She whispered softly against his temple.
Michael jerked away from her suddenly, his hands clawing at his chest, legs and arms. Shantal wiped a tear that slowly made its way down her cheek, making a decision she stood and quickly ran to the doors. Opening them she grabbed Gadari and pulled him inside.
“Do something!” She ordered as she pointed toward Michael. “Stop his madness, calm him down.”
Gadari hissed and stepped toward Michael. He fisted his right hand, reached out to grasp Michael’s wildly waving arms, he pulled him onto his feet and pulling his right hand back he swung hard toward Michael’s jaw.

The next few Chapters will be posted as soon as i can. still writing Chapter 17, so as soon as i finish I'll post chapters 15-17 here.
