this to be the cause of the angst. This is a wonderful look at the two of them early on - a cottage with Madeline tending to the
flower beds. Section was different back then wasn't it? Poor Paul - he seems to disheartened and haunted which is reflected
nicely by the fact that it's late autumn (I'm a big fan of nature used to set the tone). Madeline seems so distant and rational
about her decision. I guess it's not enough in spite of the fact that it was all she asked - leaves me wondering why on earth she
would have chosen Charles. Was it political, did she think she was becoming Paul's weakness? This would certainly leave him
with a thick layer of scar tissue. You write these two so very well - Paul is so very human as a result of your work.
