The Worm

On his very first fishing trip, my youngest Son, was very excited to be going. That is, until he realized just what fishing was all about.

Sitting down on a rock beside him, I listened to his concerns, explaining that was how to fish. You have to put the worm on the hook, put the line in the water & wait for a fish to bite.

At 3 years old, he literally wrung his hands, and paced about with clenched fists. His concern was for those poor worms destined to be stabbed and put on a hook to catch the fish.

He wasn't interested in trying & chose to just sit there thinking. I had never encountered so much empathy for the worms.

The fishing didn't last too long, since both boys were so young 3 & 4.

So my husband & I decided to pack it up.

I went over to where my youngest son was sitting so we could leave, and he was crying.

I didn't understand, until he opened up his hand.

There in that small hand was a worm he'd saved from a hook, only to have it somehow dry up and die.
