Part 3

Setting: Paradise Lounge

Sonny Corinthos moved with his usual ease as he surveyed the patrons and employees of his club. The dancers swayed to the seedy somewhat off beat music in the background as customers waved bills clutched in grimy fingers, clamored for attention. As Sonny observed from the bar, his nose picked up the plethora of scents to be found: Lust, booze, cigarettes and cheap cigars, fear, but most of all the need for survival. No matter what all the bleeding heart liberals said about him and his club, he offered these girls protection. Maybe not in the most conventional of ways, but still they were off the streets, not on drugs and were safe from physical harm. He had never, nor would he ever raise a hand to any of the girls. Most especially Bird. He'd worried for a while about the others getting jealous of his attention towards her, but they'd only taken her under their wings and showed her support and friendship. They all loved Bird, she was family to them. Monique even watched Avriel from time to time. Sonny could well recall the day Bird walked into the club.

It was a cold, rainy night. Grey clouds had successfully blotted out the moon as sheets of rain you could barely see through came pouring down like waterfalls. A small figure walked in and shook the water off her beat-up windbreaker. The kid must've been freezing wearing nothing more than a t-shirt, jeans, worn out tennis shoes and a black-eye that covered half her face and made Sonny's blood boil.

Girl: "Excuse me, I'm looking for work. You got any?"

Sonny(shakes his head): "Nothin' but cleaning up and an open spot for a dancer. But there's this shelter..."

Girl(cuts him of): "Wait. Let me show you what I can do. If you don't want to hire me after that, fine. But at least give me a chance."

He stood there thinking and had barely decided to turn her down when music started playing and movement caused him to look at the stage. There she was, long brown hair cascading down her back as she wrapped herself around the pole and held it like a lover. Her body curved in a sensual rhythm that caused a sudden reaction in his groin. Even as his mind screamed that this was wrong and he should stop her, his eyes remained riveted as she peeled off her top and revealed a black bra, encasing small but firm breast, a tight flat stomach and ribs that pushed against her skin. Closer inspection also indicated bruises that criss-crossed over already healed scars. Sonny's hands clenched in combined anger and lust. By now she'd kicked off her shoes and jeans and was once more attached to the pole. One leg remained on the ground as the other wrapped high around the pole and she bent her back as she spun, giving him a brief glimpse of cleavage. She was good at this. Men would come running to see her dance, to have this rush of desire. But she was too young. He knew it, there was no way he could allow her or ask her to dance in his club. It'd be child abuse. That right there settled it for him and he rose to shut off the music. When the music stopped, so did she. Her back to him, he could see how her spine protruded and even more spatterings of scars across her delicate skin. Still the bone structure was strong and well defined. She turned to him and as she moved to speak he held up a hand.

Sonny: "How old are you sweetheart?"

Girl: "Seventeen."

It was a lie. A practiced one and many wouldn't have questioned it if she didn't pull back her shoulders and raise her chin as though daring anyone to not believe her.

Sonny(quirks a brow): "How old?"

Girl (shoulders slumping): "Sixteen."

Sonny: "Let's try this one more time."

Girl(annoyed): "All right, all right. I'm fifteen okay?"

Sonny: "You know I can't hire you as a dancer. You're too young. I mean you're still a kid."

Girl(bitterly): "Not in my world."

Sonny(sighs): "Look, like I said, I've got the dancer position and I need somebody to clean up around here. What don't you come back tomorrow and we'll get you started with that."

Girl(nods while getting dressed): "Sure. Thanks."

She started out the door when Sonny stopped her.

Sonny: "By the way, the name's Sonny. What's yours?"

Girl: "People call me Bird."

And with that she walked out into the night.

She came back the next night and cleaned up in back and later moved to coat checking. A few months later she started doing the books for him. She was talented at everything he gave her to do. But that still didn't provide the anonymity she desired. There's a certain thing that happens to the girls that dance, they lose their identity and become nameless, faceless pieces of entertainment. That's what Bird wanted, and she got it about six months after she came to him. A dancer had called in and they were short one for the show, so naturally Bird stepped in for her. Sonny wasn't around to argue the point so there had been no problem. But when Sonny'd found out he'd been furious. He could lose his club, go to jail. The girls got him to calm down, but it was the reaction from the customers that really caught his attention. Night after night, men came in asking to see Bird, "the young-looking one". The response was phenomenal and no one questioned her age at all. Despite all that though, Sonny was reluctant to agree. He didn't want to feed that fantasy of depravity with the face of innocence, youth and sexuality. But Bird refused to be told no. And even five years later, she was still his most popular dancer. Even after five years of watching her dance, Sonny had to take Monique to a back room and appease the hunger Bird could stir within him. Monique understood his need wasn't depraved, but that he needed to be enfolded in the innocence hovering below Bird's stoney surface. But even as Monique understood why Sonny wanted her, she also knew that he would only bring more darkness into Bird's life. A life that had been blackened enough. Despite all this, Sonny still craved Bird's friendship more than her body. Over the years he had gotten to know her, and yet she was still a mystery. He had know idea who Avriel's father was or who had given Bird the scars she carried like war medals, though his instincts told him they were one and the same. After five years he still called her Bird, did not know her real name. But she was the sister he never had and he would give his life to protect her and her daughter. Of that they were all sure.

Chap:4

Setting: Murphy's Coffee Shop

It was a beautiful spring morning and Jason Morgan was looking forward to every minute of it. He got off his Firebolt XB9R and walked into the shop, slipping his leather jacket off as he entered.

(A/N hopefully the link will work and you can see the bike)

He looked up and saw the reason for his good mood. Robin. She was sitting at a table by the window talking to her daughter Avriel. They looked so much alike it was uncanny. Jason had to stop a moment, caught in the beauty of the bond mother and daughter shared as well as the image of the woman in front of him. He'd seen women he thought were beautiful, but this was something far different. Something in her eyes, the way she moved, the way she spoke captivated him completely. He slowly took in her attire: Bright red tank top, he didn't miss the light scar above her elbow, fitted black pants, that showed off her abs and her long brown hair left free to caress her skin ever so softly. Avriel was wearing a cute overall set with a little brown puppy on the front pocket. Avriel was the first to look up and see him. He smiled and walked over to them.

Jason: "Hi. I was worried you might not show."

Robin(laughes): "Well, here we are. Have a seat."

Jason sat down and smirked slightly at the subtle observation from Robin. He saw her eyes move over him and he hoped he was dressed all right for her tastes. As if reading his thoughts, she smiled.

Robin: "I like the jacket, makes it a lot warmer on that bike of yours. What is that, a Buell Firebolt?"

At that moment Jason Morgan fell head over heels in love. Not only was this woman beautiful, well spoken, had impecable taste in clothing, but she knew about bikes as well. She was perfect.

Avriel Scorpio looked at her mother's breakfast companion and found it difficult not to laugh. He had fallen for her without a doubt. Not that she could blame him. Her mother was exceptionally beautiful and really nice. Any guy would be lucky to date her.

Avriel sat at the able with her mother and Jason, he'd asked her to call him that rather than Mr. Morgan. She watched the exchange between the two adults and wondered at the power that Jason held to make her mother smile that way. No man had ever brought that light in her eyes, person besides Avriel herself had been able to. It made her a bit jealous, but all in all she appreciated Jason's ability. It was difficult to bring Robin out of her shell, Avriel had seen her mother hurt many times by men, had heard her cry out when nightmares seized her on the nights she didn't go out, watched her try to hide the tears that ran their course down her cheeks. All this was because of the life her mother had been forced to live. Avriel may have only been five but she knew the difference between having a choice and being forced. Robin had had no choice in living on the street, she'd had no choice about hooking for Dash, the only choice Robin had on her own was whether or not she should keep her baby. And there was no one on earth who would ever know how happy Avriel was that Robin had chosen to be a mother. She was so good to Avriel, a little strict sometimes and Avriel would try not to make her mother worried although that wasn't always easy. She knew her mother worried about Dash coming back into their lives, but in Jason, Avriel could see a savior, someone to protect them. But first she had to help Jason, he may be able to make her mommy smile and laugh like no one else, but he would have a very hard time getting through her defenses enough to prove he cared.

Jason(looking concerned): "Avriel? Are you all right? You've been really quiet."

Robin: "She's fine Jason. She does this on occasion. I think she's trying to figure you out."

Robin smiled and kissed her daughter on the head, earning her a beaming grin from the angel.

Jason(reluctantly): "Well I should get going. I have a meeting in an hour and I don't think going in jeans is a good idea."

Robin(smiling): "It's okay. This was fun Jason, maybe we could get together again sometime."

Jason(smiles): "I'd like that."

Jason didn't tear his eyes away from her until he felt a tug on his sleeve. He looked down to see Avriel looking up at him.

Jason: "What's up little one?"

Avriel motioned for him to come closer. He crouched down in front of her and was surprised when she wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered, "Ilike you" in his ear. This caught him off guard and it touched him so much that for a moment he found it hard to speak. He was about to say something when a loud voice shouted out.

Voice: "Bird! Oh my God, it really is you. I've been sitting over there wondering if it was or not."

Robin had risen from her chair and now took a step back, finding herself trapped against the window behind her. Jason didn't fail to notice her recoiling and stepped in front of the short, balding, man, preventing him from getting any closer.

Man: "Hey buddy, get outta the way."

Jason(calmly): "She doesn't want to talk to you."

Man: "Whatever chump, I'll talk to her if I want."

The man moved to get by but Avriel blocked his way this time. There was no way she would let anyone scare her mom like this. She felt Robin grab her from behind just as the man lashed out with his hand.

Man: "Move it kid!"

Robin bit off an angry yelp and was about to go after the guy for even comingnear her child when Jason grabbed the man's arm and pulled him towards the door. Robin saw Jason's eyes hardening to an icy blue as he ground his teeth in an obvious effort to control his anger. Robin had never had anyone defend her like that before and she was relieved, but also frightened by it. she saw how easily Jason slipped from being sweet and gentle to being hard and angry, but she couldn't help the little smidgeon of doubt that he'd ever be that way with her or Avriel.

Jason(seething): "Never, and I repeat never come near them again! Do I make myself perfectly clear?"

He brought his face close to the other man's and it was then that he smelled the alcohol. He flinched back and pushed the man through the door and then made his way back to his companions. Robin was bent at the waist peering into Avriel's face.

Robin(worried): "Oh Baby, are you okay?"

Avriel(nodding): "Yeah Mommy, I'm okay. Thanks to Jason."

She turned adoring eyes to the man approaching them. This incident had merely proven her theory right, he was the one to save her mother. From Dash and from any other demons that chased her through her life.

Jason: "I'm sorry about that. The guy was drunk, I don't know what his problem was."

Robin: "Thank you Jason, Avriel's right. We're both okay because of you."

Jason smiled and without thinking brought her to him in a hug. He felt her falter and then bring her arms around to embrace him loosely. Jason felt a small hand trying to wedge its way between them and shifted so as to include Avriel. He pickedthe little girl up in his arms without letting go of her mother.

Jason: "I know this may sound strange since we just now met, but I want you to know that as long as I'm around, I won't let anyone hurt either of you."

He looked down at Robin with such sincerity that she couldn't help but believe him. She tightened her arms around him briefly and then pulled away, reaching for her daughter. Jason let them both go with a promise that she would call him and while the morning had hit a slight snag, they both knew something was happening. jason knew without a doubt he was falling for Robin, Avriel could see it as well, while Robin saw herself gaining a good friend. But, Robin also knew she still had to be wary, not of Jason, but of what could happen to him if Dash should ever decide to come looking for them again. She was appalled that that man approached her like that. She'd never exposed her daughter to that part of her life before and she would do everything in her power to never let Jason know of it either. Just how she would do that she didn't know, she just knew she had to. There was no way he would stick around if he were to ever find out and if she allowed herself and Avriel to care about him and he walked away, where would that leave them? In a place Robin had been far too many times, but this time she might not make it out.

Chap:5

Setting: Robin's Apartment

Avriel sat on her mothers bed watching her fly around the room. She always thought it was funny when her mom got all jittery over the way she looked. About a dozen outfits were littering the bed and about five more were lying on the floor at Robin's feet. She was going out to dinner with Jason and he told her to wear something dressy.

Robin: "Damn it!" Looks at Avriel. "Oh, sorry baby. I kind of forgot you were there."

Avriel smiled and shook her head. Her mother always tried to use only good language around her, swearing was totally taboo. But it's not like she didn't know the words anyway. Monique had a way with them that was almost like poetry. Avriel looked at Robin trying a red silk blouse with a red chinese print skirt and then snickered as she tore it off and threw it frustratedly across the room. Robin looked at her askance.

Robin: "You think your mother's plight is funny do you?"

Avriel(nodding): "Yes Mommy, Jason won't care what you're wearing. He wants to go out with you, not your clothes."

Robin laughed and picked up Avriel swinging her around.

Robin: "You think so huh? All right then, you pick something out for me to wear, otherwise I'll only have two options, not go or go in just my underwear."

Avriel: "Well Jason would want you to go, but I don't think he'd mind if you had no clothes on."

Robin blushed and laughed again, setting Avriel on the floor and sending her over to the closet with a tap on the behind. Sometimes her daughter knew a little too much for her own, and her mother's own, good. She watched Avriel look up at her clothes and then pull out a dress and sheer top to go over it. The dress was silver with small black flowers on it, the bodice conformed to her figure and it had thin straps that came high up on her shoulders. The top was black and clung nicely to her. Avriel then pulled out some three inch silver sandals with a rhinestone buckly and then went to Robin's vanity and pulled out some bobbypins with a rhinestone at the end. Robin looks at the outfit Avriel picked for her. She was always amazed that Avriel had such good taste in clothes at such a young age. Robin went over to her vanity and pulled out her makeup. She rummaged around until she found her "Lilac Dusk" blush, "Gypsy"eyeshadow,"Glimmer Clear" lip liner and "Like Satin" lipstick. After applying this and a light coat of mascara she curled her hair and pulled several strands back securing them with the hairpins. She chose simple silver and rhinestone earrings, a silver beaded necklace and a silver and paste ring as her jewelry. As she was reaching for her dress there was a knock at her door.

Robin: "Yes?"

Voice: "It's me. Can I come in?"

Robin: "Of course Monique."

Robin smiled as her raven haired friend made her way into the room. She'd talked to Monique earlier and asked that if she met Jason, to please not use the name Bird. It would make him start asking questions. Questions she wasn't prepared to answer.

Monique: "Another outfit care of Avriel?"

Robin: "Yep. She has impecible taste. Especially when her mother is a total basketcase over what to wear."

Monique grinned. Bird was well known for her obsessiveness when it came to looking good for certain people. If she cared about them she worked hard to look her best. Jason must be very special to her. Monique noticed Robin struggling to get into the dress and rushed over to help her and soon all that was left were her shoes and perfume. Monique heard a knock at the front door and went to go get it as Robin chose her "Tranquility" perfume in the hopes that her totally jangled nerves might settle down with some scented promptings. Putting on her shoes and grabbing her black brocade handbag, she was now ready to go. She went out to the livingroom and saw Jason looking so handsome in a charcoal grey suit, silver silk shirt and grey and blue Jerry Garcia tie. He looked up from watching Avriel playing and his mouth fell open at the sight in front of him.

Jason: "Wow. You look incredible."

Robin(blushes): "Thank you. You look pretty incredible yourself."

Monique watches the exchange with amusement. She's seen Jason a few times with Sonny so she knows he's Sonny's partner. question is did Robin know it. That would certainly make things interesting.

Monique: "Well you two should probably get going."

Robin: "You're right." Bends down kissing Avriel. "Goodnight angel of mine. You behave for Monique."

Jason: "Bye ladies."

With that they leave and Monique and Avriel burst into giggles.

Monique: "Your mother told me she went kind of crazy tonight over what to wear."

Avriel: "Yeah. But look what Jason thought of her. He could hardly talk."

Monique: "She looked beautiful."

Avriel: "She always looks beautiful. She is beautiful."

Monique: "That she is my dear. That she is."

Setting: Outside Robin's apartment

Jason and Robin have just reached Jason's Mustang and are about to get in when they hear a noise in the alley. Robin jumps slightly and bumps into Jason.

Jason: "You all right?"

Robin: "Yeah. Loud noises startle me sometimes. Especially when I'm either away from or leaving Avriel. I worry about her."

Jason nods in understanding. He lifts her hand to his lips and kisses her fingers softly.

Jason: "You don't have to worry while I'm around."

Robin smiles up at him and that look alone is enough to warm his heart. He opens her door and helped her inside. Going around to his side of the car he saw something unusual. A rose angel growing in between the cracks of the sidewalk. It was strange to see wild flowers growing in this area. He bent down and picked it and then got in the car.

Jason:(hands Robin the flower) "Here."

Robin: "What's this?"

Jason: "It's a rose angel. It was growing in the sidewalk. I just thought that one beautiful thing deserves another. Especially when they are both proof that beauty is everywhere."

Robin's eyes tear up and she leans over and gently kisses him on the cheek.

Robin: "Thank you."

Jason starts the car and they drive off to the restaurant in companionable silence.
