In reply to: passer-by A 's message, "Re: For all 6B boys" on 15:50:57 01/18/04 Sun

看了這麼久,小弟自問英語水平不高,和passer-by A差得遠了,但批評人其實是很容易的,就拿passer-by A的回應作個例子:
1.>I'm not at any side but just interested in the message
>formal. That's one difficuly non-native English
根據passer-by A的理據,這篇回應的格式是formal的,但好像有些不太formal的地方,如"I'm","That's"
2. >we see here is mixed syles -- informal as well as
>formal. That's one difficuly non-native English
>colloguial use. There may be some kind of
以上的句子好像有些字打錯了
3. >People may argue that there is no problem about
>hand, we might immediately feel like being threatened
這篇文章用的是present tense,但上句中用了"might"一詞,passer-by A 是否想說明"immediately feel like being threatened"是very unlikely?
4. >a matter, however, when we keep reading the whole
"however"之前是否該用分號,或開新一句子而用full stop?
5. >explanation but I think it may take long to explain.
根據Cambridge Dictionary的解釋,"take long"主要用在negative sentenses或questions中,如"I'm just writing a letter but it won't take long."
6. >I would like to apologize for any unpleasantness I
在英式英語中,上句如用"apologise"是否較佳?
7. >We tend to more accept the verb 'do'.
上句如改以"to accept the verb do more" 是否較佳?
8. >the tones of the sender are of encouraging and cordial
>so as to lessen the anxious and intimidated feelings
>caused by the teachers and the work. On the other

3. >People may argue that there is no problem about
>hand, we might immediately feel like being threatened
這篇文章用的是present tense,但上句中用了"might"一詞,passer-by A 是否想說明"immediately feel like being threatened"是very unlikely?

=.= might 是可以的...不是指用past tense

4. >a matter, however, when we keep reading the whole
"however"之前是否該用分號,或開新一句子而用full stop?

如果你要傳統的英文的話,的確however前應該用full stop。不過,我不覺得回應都要用傳統英文。

5. >explanation but I think it may take long to explain.
根據Cambridge Dictionary的解釋,"take long"主要用在negative sentenses或questions中,如"I'm just writing a letter but it won't take long."

你都識講是主要用在negative "sentences"。 唔是negative就唔用得??

6. >I would like to apologize for any unpleasantness I
在英式英語中,上句如用"apologise"是否較佳?

=.=現在是兩字相通,再說一次,回應別人不用用上傳統英式英語。

7. >We tend to more accept the verb 'do'.
上句如改以"to accept the verb do more" 是否較佳?

沒分別,more作為adv可放在 accept此word前。
在語氣方面應該為更好。

我對此事沒有意見,只是覺得"有問題"的回覆有問題而已。
自問英文不好,不願多評。如果我有錯,請多多指教
的確批評別人容易,接受批評很難吧?

Thank you for taking time to read my stuff and raising interesting questions. At least, it shows that students are still interested in English and can go beyond surface. That's good to Hong Kong.
By the way, 'concerning' is used when we introduce a topic. It is usually put at the start of a paragraph. However, 'be concerned about' is used when you express your care about the matter or the person. There is no phrase like 'concerning about'
