Marian,

Difficult to give hard and fast times. In the past few years everyone who has queued for tickets on the door has got in. Since you won't be able to buy a ticket until all those holding tickets have been let in, or 10 minutes before the start of the concert you won't get a particularly good position in the hall, particularly the Arena. Don't know too much about how the gallery works as I've never been there.

That said, I'd have thought you would be well up the "hopefuls" queue arriving between 4:30 and 5am (unless anyone else wants to correct me?). Assuming the Proms guide is correct, this year the hopefuls queue will be on the left-hand side of the south steps as you look at the Royal Albert Hall (the south steps connect Prince COnsort Road with the hall), and the ticket-holders on the right. This is the opposite way around from previous years, so there may be some confusion. Hopefully there will be signs at the front of the queues, but these don't always get sorted ou until later in the day.

Taking breaks from the queue for eating etc is not generally a problem. The normal rule of thumb is that you should be "within the vicinity of the hall for the majority of the time". Generally it's a ppreciated if you're not away for much over an hour at a time, but this is sometimes slightly relaxed on the last night as people need to go away to put on their dinner suits, posh frocks etc (if they are so inclined). It's good manners to tell the people either side of you in the queue that you're going, and make sure you leave a marker behind - nothing too valuable of course. I've never really heard of things going missing but you don't want to take the chance. Also for the Last Night queue the Hall stewards carry out official roll-calls, so make sure you're about when these happen (there will be posters around the place to say when they are going to happen), otherwise you may find yourself put to the back of the list.

David
