I am an American citizen. My father was Scotch/Irish/Cherokee and my mother was English (Harrell) / Cheyenne. I belong to a club of Triumph Motorcar enthusiasts. All of this aside, I think that omitting "Rule Britannia" from the Proms is just as absurd as omitting "The Star Spangled Banner" from events in the United States. In my opinion, the three most beautiful and inspiring national anthems in the world are "The Star Spangle Banner", "Rule Britannia", "O Canada" and "God Save The Queen" (My Country Tis' of Thee" in the USA). I remind you that many have died for those anthems. To omit them from performance is to dishonor your fallen comrades as well as those who were fortunate enough to return at war's end. Maybe someone needs to reread, assuming they have read it in the first place, the texts of these great anthems.
Respectfully,
John Michael Connally, Age 68
