Presumably the brass combo did not have the permission of the Albert Hall, but on Sunday morning at 09:40 the group warming up to the sound of a large ghetto blaster in preparation for a fun run did (or so I understand).

I do not object to the use of the steps for this purpose but am puzzled. Two years ago, when the steps were restored I suggested that it would be nice to revert to a custom of many years (on and off) of having performances on the steps. My idea was to let anyone who wished to bring a group (preferable made up of or including promenaders) and play (any idiom - within reason, it has to sit with the majority of the queuers). I would be willing to co-ordinate it to ensure an even spread throughout the season and not have everyone on the same weekend.

I was asked to hold back until the Hall had negotiated with the residents. I am still awaiting news of the results of that negotiation. It was, therefore, irritating to find that another charitable organisation, not, at least overtly, made up of customers, has been allowed what we have been asked to abstain from.

An interesting conclusion is that the residents object more to be woken from an afternoon sleep by relatively quiet unamplified instruments than they do to being woken from their night slumbers by something far louder and far more energetic than most of what we would be likely to play.
