Frankly, Simon, 4pm will probably be easily early enough this year. The day queue seems to have been building more slowly in recent years, even for popular stuff, and there's nothing in this year's First Night that will guarantee a sell-out. Elgar's concerto is always popular, but the soloist isn't a household name (yet, perhaps). So you should be quite safe turning up at four. But I wouldn't leave it very much later, in case.

Oh, the relief of no longer having to tackle the day queue! I won't be there on Friday until maybe 6pm, but since I have a season, I won't have a problem getting in...
