I agree completely that we cannot allow the Last Night to be cancelled because of the events in America. This outrageous and cowardly act of terrorism was aimed at democracy and our way of life, and by cancelling something so clearly associated with the way we do things would be cowering to these thugs.

Having said that, there is obviously a need to modify the evening. I'm not sure how well the Liberty Bell march would sit - perhaps another piece could be substituted. I am also sure that 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine' should be dropped as the title is somewhat inappropriate. Obviously, the party spirit will be lacking, but something to show our solidarity with our friends in America, and Maestro Slatkin's countrymen and women, should still take place. I would also urge for a minute's silence during the performance, perhaps after the speech
