Subject: Lady Lions and Tigers

From CBS Sports:

“ While Minnesota has risen from a No. 9 seed to a No. 5 seed over the past month, Princeton has done the opposite. After losing a second game of the season to Columbia, the two teams are now tied atop the Ivy League, and Columbia's head-to-head tiebreaker gives it the projected auto bid.

With Princeton remaining in the current NCAA Tournament field, that means the Ivy League is a two-bid conference, taking away an at-large spot from the bubble (sorry, Stanford). However, it remains to be seen if that will hold, as Columbia almost certainly needs to win the Ivy League Tournament to reach March Madness.

But even if the Lions do win the Ivy League Tournament, Princeton might find itself on the outside looking in if it loses another game in the regular season. The Tigers have four games left on the schedule, with a Quad-2 contest at Harvard being the main challenge. In the first meeting between the teams this season, Princeton needed overtime in order to win at home.”

The terminology was off. Columbia currently is in line for the #1 tourney seed, but the tourney winner gets the auto NCAA bid. The two would tie again as league champions.

I would be very surprised if they do not get an at-large bid even if they lose to Columbia a third time in the ILT.

Princeton's nonconference schedule was competitive and they did very well against several P5 schools.

Charlie Creme’s update this morning has Columbia winning the Ivy tourney and the auto berth as a #11 seed, and Princeton as a bye and a #10 seed.

The implication is that, if Princeton wins the tourney, Columbia has a slim chance at the last four in, curently #12 Colorado and Clemson.

I do not see that implication at all. Rather, Charlie Creme seems to be saying that the based on the results so far, the Ivy League is likely to have two representatives in the NCAA Tournament, namely Columbia and Princeton. However, obviously everything depends upon what actually happens in the final two weekends of the regular season and then the Ivy League Championship Tourament.

Based on Columbia’s 2 wins over Princeton as well as their trajectory since early season losses, they certainly deserve a bid, even if they fall to the Tigers in a third match in the league tournament for the NCAA auto bid. OTOH I’m not so sure my Tigers get a bid unless they go at least 5-1 the rest of the way.

P women take the regular season title with H’s upset of Columbia moments after P defeated Y.

The outcome of this ridiculous upcoming tournament is another story where I think Columbia is the favorite, although an unexpected result is possible since neither Columbia (nor P and I include here it’s close wins) is prohibitively dominant. IMO. Can’t rule out H, and Brown could surprise but I think that is somewhat less likely.

The results yesterday realigning the ILT and forcing Columbia to beat Harvard and Princeton back-to-back is a huge downer. According to Charley Creme’s new Bracketology today, Lions have to win the tourney to make the NCAAs. Obviously, the same for Crimson. Tigers apparently are in regardless, barring insane upsets in other small conferences. Bruno has lost three of four, and is a huge long shot.

I take your points above. But I do think Columbia is still well situated. H beating them twice in a week? And we have not yet figured Columbia ourselves and H has proven to be a very difficult opponent. Not that I am taking Brown for granted.

P played great in the first half of its win over Brown and played as a very beatable team in the second. A 27 point lead was cut to 10 at one point. Lots of P turnovers. A 14-0 Brown run. Brown women, first getting blown out - 14 point first half- showed tremendous grit and determination. Their league leading rebounder, a lone Ivy WBB season double double player, was injured in first quarter and never returned. The hole they dug for themselves was just too big for them to climb out of.

Meanwhile H beats Columbia in OT. P now has to best H for a third time, no small task, for the automatic bid.

Charlie Creme now has Princeton as a lock for NCAAs. If Harvard wins Saturday, they bump Richmond from the tourney and the Ivies have two bids again.

Thanks, Bill Tierney.

Tigers holding Crimson to 49 in Cambridge earlier was the tipoff.

Tigers 63-53 today, with the suspicion that it would take a long time before Crimson could score 30 points in a first half against this version of Berube’s defense.

One bid for the Ivies this year.

After P leading most of the game, H tied it at 49 midway through the 4th. I thought it could have gone either way but the P women would not be denied.

Berube has done a great job at P from day one inheriting a solid legacy from Banghart and improving on it. I think this was her best coaching performance yet. A thin roster whittled further by losing a backup to injury, and without some of the height we had become accustomed to and managing to navigate to a title and tourney win. Well done by the staff and players.

Yes, outstanding job by Coach Berube and her staff. Vast majority of the minutes went to just six players, none over 6’1”, and they ended up 26-3 and ranked #23 for the past several weeks. Congrats to this impressive Tiger team, I’m looking forward to seeing them in the Big Dance!

I had wondered if thinness of roster would adversely affect their season.

Turns out, not so much. Coach and squad for the win.

Second thoughts, Tabitha? We’d welcome you back, if you do’t mind giving up those UVA credits.

Charlie Creme has Tigers as a 10 seed, UVa as a 12 on the bubble.
