Subject: Brown Hockey coach resigns

Brendan Whittet has handed in his resignation as Brown men's ice hockey coach. He will be taking a family medical leave and when he returns, he will be taking a job in the athletic administration. Whittet was the coach for 17 years. They were 17 tough years as Brown hockey has been a huge disappointment. In this column I often called for his replacement. Yet, I may have been rash in judging him so harshly. Often a coach is a victim of circumstances. The difficult admissions requirements of the ivy league certainly didn't help, and the old facility he was working with didn't help either. Competing against Harvard and Cornell for blue chip ice hockey recruits is a herculean task for anyone, and Whittet may not have been the right man for the job. I don't know. But I do know that a change was needed. The program needs to be revaluated top to bottom and huge changes are necessary to be competitive. I don't think this could have been done with Whittet in place, so now that he is gone, it is time to do ice hockey right. I wish Whittet and I hope the medical family leave will have a successful conclusion.

Gentlemen; Well, said GMB. Everyone of our ancient eight squads in every major sport has gone through the dilemma of the paragon of recruitment versus admissions our blue squad has experienced that over the last five years on the ice.

Best wishes to the coach. I was wondering the same thing as you, GBI, given the program's record over the last many years, but he apparently represented the program with integrity and decency, if not success.
