Subject: Basketball Game #14 — The Last Roundup

First Saturday game of six in the books. Let’s just say Bruno did NOT take AO’s advice. They tie Yale men in New Haven in the last minute, then Aaron Cooley drains a three at the OT buzzer to win 84-81. Costs Eli any chance at #1 ILT seed, plus possible co-championship.

Three more games at 2PM, one at 3PM, Princeton men at Palestra at 6PM.

Men — Big Red stomp out Lions per form. Tie Yale for second, but Eli technically remains #2 seed based on NET rating. Princeton has clinched #1, and co-championship.

Women — Princeton, Columbia and Brown win comfortably. Tigers and Lions are co-champs, seem headed for ILT final matchup. Tigers seem to have NCAA slot locked up, Lions need to win tourney.

Quakers shot 56% at home and lost by 22.

Tigers with 12 first-half threes to go up 49-34. Second half garbage time, final 105-83, Bill Bradley-type score.

Tigers win championship, still not assured of NCAA without an ILT win.

Other than the fourteen guys in white jerseys, nobody is more surprised than me about Brown's victory on Saturday. Congratulations to the Bears. They hung around, hung around, hung around and, when the door finally cracked open, they put their foot in to force overtime and then won it.

Wow, what a run Brown is on. Remember when Y-P-Cornell were undefeated against the other five? Brown has beaten two of the so-called Big Three and now gets a crack at the last one in Princeton.

Saturday night, when the in-game line got up to Penn +18.5, I said, "There's no way the Tigers can keep shooting like this," and put my money on the Quakers to make it, if not respectable, at least not historic. My bet looked good when Penn got the margin down to 11, but then Princeton decided, "Let's make some history and hang a Ben Franklin on the guys whose school was founded by Ben Franklin." Tigers by 22. First time either Killer P has hung a century mark on the other. Ouch.

For those fans who thought two weeks ago that the #1 seed had a smoother path to the final, Mike Martin has news for you. He didn't mind playing for the win on Saturday because he wasn't putting anything new on tape. His guys are just crashing the boards and playing good defense. They're winning the old-fashioned way.

Both games on Saturday afternoon will be barn burners. This could be the best #1-#4 game since 2017.

I think it's time for the League to consider awarding POY, COY and all-Ivy after the ILT. The major contenders will have one or two games this weekend and I would like to see how our stars perform when the lights are on the brightest.

Yes, that is somewhat unfair to the guys on the other four teams. I think that's tolerable collateral damage.
