Subject: Bench-Clearing Melee During South Carolina-LSU Game

Just yesterday afternoon, I was reading an online chatroom about things that men take for granted, but women find mind blowing (i.e., we can spend hours with our men friends and come back home without any update on their jobs or families).

One of the sub-threads was about being male means any disagreement can escalate to physical violence and how that changes our interactions with men we don't know. One guy posted to the effect he worked as a bouncer at a bar and it was a gross mis-generalization to say that women don't fight.

Yesterday's South Carolina-LSU game would seem to back him up. Tiger coach Kim Mulkey in her post-game press conference barked at the refs for only calling two fouls in the fourth quarter, directly suggesting that the officials had set the stage for a bench-clearing melee by being too lax with physical conduct. Mulkey: "We're going to foul your ass. They're going to foul your ass."

I know it's practically required in college basketball to blame the referees for everything these days, but methinks the lady protest too much.

Gotta love the brother of the LSU player who was pushed to the floor to start the melee jumping out of the stands and over the officials' table onto the hardwood. He was ready to go.

In a related matter: The Tennessee women’s coach should be fired for losing the semifinal game against USC. if memory serves, she had the lead, had timeouts left and a foul to give and somehow didn’t use any of that with 1.7 seconds left. She allowed USC to inbound the ball to an open player who then was given an open three which she made uncontested to win by one. How do you not call the TO to set your defence with instructions to foul anyone who caught the inbounds pass outside the arc before a shot could be attempted thus getting the clock down by at least a second or more so that any ensuing shot attempted could not be a catch and soot but instead would have to be a tip. When the clock is at .3 seconds, by rule it can’t be a catch and shoot. Pat Summit must be rolling over in her grave.

I saw that because it was SportsCenter's top play of the day. I agree with you.

The woman who received the pass, Cardozo, is their 6'8" big. She had only one previous three-point attempt in her career, which she missed.

On the video, the other three Tennessee players inside the lines are guarded tightly -- nobody on the inbounds passer, so literally five defenders guarding three offensive players -- and Cardozo is left completely alone standing on the three-point arc, nobody within eight feet of her.

It's almost as if the Tennessee coach thought, "Hey, this will be fun. I'll play the other three players tight and give up a free unguarded three-point shot to their hulking post who hasn't left the paint all season. One way or another, this will be on SportsCenter."
