It raises the question and I fear for the future-Are the Ivies going to turn into a farm system for the Power Conferences. We have seen a bit already with some individuals foregoing their senior season to maintain eligibility and of course the ones who have to enter the transfer because of the extra COVID year (The USC gals e.g.). NIL could make it worse as per the Wash Post story on Malik Mack.

I don't think we have anyone that the Power Five wants.

At least not at present...

Every year, there are ample examples of Ivy basketball players who transfer to make important contributions to Power 5 and other D1 teams that are making a run at March Madness for both men's and women's teams.

This 2023-24 season, Ivy League men's basketball players at Power 5 conferences included: Ryan Langborg at Northwestern; Chris Ledlum and Jordan Dingle at St Johns; Paxson Wojcik at UNC; and Gus Larson at Cal. EJ Jarvis transferred to Florida but elected to not play this season.

Mason Forbes with St Mary’s, along with Ryan Langborg and Paxson Wojcik, already have punched their tickets to March Madness. They potentially may be joined by other Ivies in the Big Dance, such as Greg Dolan and Dame Adelekun with Loyola Chicago and Ledlum and Dingle with St Johns. Jacob O’Connell at Merrimack and Eddie Turner at Montana State, just missed joining the Big Dance when their teams lost in their conference finals. Finally, other Ivy league players contributing to D1 programs included: Idan Tretout at Iona: Max Lorca Loyd at UMBC; Luka Sakota at Northeastern; Lucas Monroe at Drexel; Keeshawn Kellman at FGCU; Matthue Coton at Hawaii; Perry Cowan at Manhattan; and Marcus Filien at U Albany.

Having 18 Ivy League men's basketball players contributing to D1 basketball programs is a good indication of the relative strength of our conference.

Bob, your question is right on point. Unfortunately, I think the answer is that *ALL* mid-major conferences are going to become farm team systems for the high majors. Within the high majors, the middle-of-the-road teams will feed the top of the food chain.

Who is surprised by this effect of introducing the transfer portal and NILs at the same time?

There are those who still don't understand the basic principles of capitalism or labor economics. Incredibly, many of those are faculty members on our campuses. But this is all working out as one could have reasonably foreseen. It's like the ILT. Like it or not, it's had exactly the effect we thought it would.

The good news is that the effect should be much less on the women's side, and that if any conference can count on keeping a disproportionate share of its top male players, it's us. That's the strength of our brand names and thank goodness for that most fundamental of our recruiting draws.

Think of the atmosphere at other mid-majors. If you're a coach who has found an undiscovered gem in recruiting or developed one on campus, you know that, the better you do in helping him flourish, the more likely you are to lose him by senior year.

I can't get too sad about that because the real tragedy is the effect this will have on high school sports and American high schools in general. Speaking of things which are not hard to forecast, I predict no improvement in the educational quality of the bottom quintile of American public high schools over the next several decades, with rippling effects up and down the food chain.
