It's an excellent article very much worth reading. The adversities that Abbey endured have, no doubt, baked in some inestimably valuable qualities that will endure and enable her to get to the next levels no matter what course she chooses in life. Thanks for flagging it!
(Btw, my younger daughter used to work at The Athletic.)

Thanks for posting this.

She has experienced TWO very painful events in her young life (over and above her sports injury), and yet has soldiered on. The article implies she has not yet processed it all; I hope she can do so and maintain her equanimity.

I saw many such lonely deaths as experienced by her father early in COVID, and can only imagine the pain of family members.

Best wishes to her.

This is a good read, better than the usual sports personal interest story. I recommend it to all on the board.

I saw somewhere else that Hsu was recruited by the two League powers at the time, Princeton and Penn, but chose Columbia despite not liking "the noisiness of cities," as The Athletic quotes her. Full credit to Griffith for a recruiting pitch which covered up that Manhattan is noisy.

Hsu is a very deserving POY on the women's side and I am happy for her that the chance she took on Griffith and Columbia have paid off in the form of two championships. Abbey Hsu is a remarkable young woman.

Great article...
...I don't know what bugs AO about dear old Columbia, but he clearly mis-represents what was written about CU's campus,
which is: "Abbey Hsu’s favorite part of New York is Columbia’s campus, since it walls off the clamor of the city." Anybody who has been on the main campus between 114th and 120th knows this. Why make a crack about MG's recruiting "covering up" something?

Not too much bugs me about Columbia, though I do take note that some Lion fans can be a bit defensive in reaction to what I trust fans of other schools correctly interpreted as a punchline.

In all seriousness, why do Columbia fans think that everybody is trying to say something at their expense? I had just finished expressing my admiration for Abbey Hsu.

There's a unique paranoia within the ecosystem of Morningside Heights and the diaspora of Columbia fans that is different from the admittedly emotional relationship between other Ivy fans and their alma maters.

In my defense, I submit from your consideration that you might have been selective and thus misleading while quoting from The Athletic article. The full quote is:

"Abbey Hsu's favorite part of New York is Columbia's campus, since it walls off the clamor of the city. 'I don't do too well with all the noisiness,' she says. . . ."

You and I both went to college when the SAT was required to apply. Which of us has presented the more accurate summation of the point of these two sentences?

I don't think everybody is trying to say something at CU fan's expense, just you, dear boy!
My quote is not selective. It stands. Your statement: "Full credit to Griffith for a recruiting pitch which covered up that Manhattan is noisy." is nowhere in that article.

I don't get you Columbia guys. I post a sentiment which is unambiguously praise and admiration for one of your star players whom I respect and you take offense.

You know, my post did not suggest that the words, "Full credit to Griffith for a recruiting pitch which covered up that Manhattan is noisy" was in The Athletic article. That was my punchline, which obviously did not land with you.

I don't expect everybody else to have my sense of humor, but taking offense where none is intended is on you, not me.

Away from that, I hope you enjoy the game and the atmosphere at Levien later this afternoon. My girlfriend Megan has built something special at Columbia and you Lion fans should revel in it.

If that's a reference to one of my posts about Columbia students from several months ago, +1.
