Back in the day, Auriemma (and others) employed recruiting tactics that many believed were code for homophobia. He talked about how UConn's program had great "family values" and "treated each other like family." It was believed he was taking digs against rival coaches (women) who were not married and did not want gay players on his team. Supposedly, it was the reason why Pat Summit stopped scheduling regular season games against UConn.

Auriemma vehemently denied using homophobia. But at best, he was naive. Eventually, he knocked of the "family values" recruiting pitch entirely.

'I just know there were three or four of them called on us, and I don't think there were any called on them,' Auriemma said. 'So I guess we just gotta get better on not setting illegal screens.'"

I don't think these quotes are terribly surprising if you watched his demeanor in the final minutes of the game. Seems like he has become accustomed to having things turn out his way. Perhaps I would feel differently if he were coaching my team, but that's my reaction.
