The Severn is a tough place to race. It is open and subject to tide. Wind vs tide gets whitecap nasty in a hurry. Come down from NYC the day before, practice, eat in the midshipmen's enormous mess hall, (that was an experience!), bunk in the spare accomodations of the visitor bunkhouse, get up at crack o'dawn to face the wind n' waves. Nonetheless, Annapolis puts out consistently competitive crews, despite those race day conditions.

It's Bancroft Hall. It used to be the largest dining hall in the world.

I submit their crews are competitive because of the conditions, rather than despite them.

Duyvil —

Thanks for your evocative description of a singular experience, one of those thousands of peculiarities that make intercollegiate sports so absorbing.

Although I admit the boat lost me at “considerable whitecaps.” This from folks who call a .50-caliber machine gun “covering fire.”
