I was surprised by both selections. But I can understand why they won.

without taking anything away from the other candidates, I have to admit that I was puzzled by the decision not to give the award to Hayden MacDonald. He was the most impactful player on what at least statistically was the leading defense in the league. So what was the basis for not giving it to MacDonald?

Dartmouth's defensive line was the best unit in the Ivy. Check out our rushing stats--we are over 25 yards a game ahead of the second ranked team.

And Adele was the best player on that unit.

the only stat that really matters is PPG allowed. Columbia allowed as I recall 16 PPG; Harvard was second in PPG allowed. Giving up a total of 82 points to Cornell and Yale (we held Yale to one TD and Cornell to 3 lousy FGs) speaks volumes.

If your offense fumbles on its own one yard line, few, if any, would blame the defense for not preventing a touchdown.

There's more to the story than points per game.

here are the 2024 IL defensive stats:
1. Columbia 16.1
2. Harvard 21.6
3. Dartmouth 23.9
4. Penn 26.9

The “more to the story” is that Columbia had, by far, the most complete defense in the IL by a big margin.

Columbia built their #1 ranking there on the backs of seven teams that won sparingly in '24; while giving up 50 points to Dartmouth and Harvard. Meanwhile Harvard allowed only 33 total points in their matchups against those two other IL co-champions. So, even when you're obsessing about points permitted as the ultimate stat, you're still making Harvard's case.

Dartmouth's scrubs gave up some TDs late in a few games when the expected outcome was beyond obvious.

Certainly, Bob Blackman wouldn't have appreciated it having been directed at you.
