Sometimes it’s a delight to be wrong. A week and a half ago I posted “Dead on the Ivy vine” believing that the institutions’ presidents didn’t set a day to vote on on football playoff. At the time I was convinced they were placating us. It was an unexpected pleasant surprise that the post season motion was approved! The reports stated this was being considered for the past year. I will enjoy hearing more about what went into this groundbreaking development.

Over the years I committed that two league losses all but guaranteed elimination from championship contention. For the second year we’ve seen a three two loss teams win it. Is this the new normal?

I was disappointed that there wasn’t more interest from college football fandom on Columbia’s championship. More over, I didn’t hear of any Columbia campus celebrations. The Lion FB Team deserved a celebration parade.

If you have not seen last month’s Cornell-Columbia Game, do so. By the 4th quarter it was a picturesque environment, The fall sun soaked afternoon and the blustery leaves blown on the field as The Lions and Big Red battled for The Empire State Trophy and for Columbia, maybe just maybe the Onslaught Trophy.

Brown: September 2022 I committed “If Brown can only muster two wins with EJ Perry . Then they’ll be winless the season. They’ll have to rely heavily upon Coach Perry’s infectious optimism to cope with a dark disappointing upcoming season.” That year they win 3 games but looked much better than their record indicated. That year QB Jake Wilcox lit up the scoreboard and last season despite lack of speed became a running threat. I enjoyed watching Jake Wilcox. If his football career continues I have a feeling it would be the spring UFL. Maybe if that happens and works, then the NFL might notice him. Offensive Guard Jack Connolly could be a good NFL prospect. Looking forward: The offense should not miss a beat with new trigger man James Murphy. I’m concerned the defense will turn Coach Perry into the next David Archer.

Colombia: Whomever the QB Goodwin/Sanchez/ Freeman was a dominant force in the league and so was kicker Hugo Merry. Add in their stringent defense , The Lions are in great shape to repeat the championship run.

Cornell: At the midpoint of 2021 I committed “If QB Wang becomes next year’s starter. He’ll inject life into their stagnant offense.” After this third string QB Jameson Wang lead the 2021 team in rushing he become the 2022 starter and never looked back. I enjoyed watching him and his game develop. During the 2023 media day he wanted to be a better passer. This season his drop back composure is excellent. That was a testament to the great OL protection. For some odd reason if Wang plays at the next level I have the feeling it will be in Canada. I believe this is it for him. The past three years no one knew what you’d get from this inconsistent team. Sure it was frustrating but also unexpectedly exciting. Dose any one have any Idea why Eddie Marinaro never stepped onto the field???? Looking forward: Post Jameson Wang it’s any one’s guess what The Big Red’s identity will be.

Dartmouth is simple: reload and repeat as champions. Looking for: Much of the same.

Harvard: QB Charles De Prima was by far the most electrifying player in the Ivy. He was a game changer no matter where he lined up (WR, QB, RB). I would have Loved to see him at CB and punt returner. He has NFL talent but I have the feeling this is it for him. It was great to see Shane McLaughlin return from injury to lead the team to the championship. Looking Forward: Yale still has Harvard’s number. So, they better wrap up the League Championship by week nine. Jayden Craig is less exciting than De Prima. You’ll know what you’ll get from him but he should be just as effective as Charles De Prima was. Add in Xaviah Bascon, The Crimson is set to make a run at a three-peat.

Pennsylvania: What could have been if they started Liam O’Brien in 2022 as I suggested? Their title drought may have ended. In 2022 I felt they overachieved and last fall they underachieved. However, it’s great to see they’ve finally found Alam Torgersen’s replacement. To be fair, Penn worked with in Adian Sayin’s limitations/ abilities. Looking Forward: I envision a RB by committee will be the method or replacing the electrifying Malachi Hosley. The stringent DL struggled at time last season. If they get past that and with Liam O’Brien they are serious champion contenders. Long range PK/Punter Jang has the talent to be a free agent PK/Punter. Given the NFL only has one punter and kicker on the roster, he’ll probably be the temporary free agent temporarily replacement.

Princeton: This year was their worst season since 2011. Although they lost their identity (physicality) they looked directionless. To their credit they played strong in November. Which is a testament to their character and commitment. Looking forward: It’s anyone’s guess.

Yale: Continued to be a dominant force in November despite being out of championship contention. They also found Nolan Grooms replacement in Grant Jordan. Looking Forward: Yale will be among the crowded championship contenders.

I’m excited too see how the playoff eligibility will enhance the league’s play.

I am reminded of Garrison Keillor's pride and joy Lake Wobegone, where everyone is above average.

Sparman: I appreciate the humorous reference used in your response. Multiple contenders is a testament to the quality of competitiveness in the Ivy League. I’m 100% fine with split champions but having three on a regular basis may soon get old. Under ZERO circumstances should the Ivy have a conference championship game. By sticking to the top finisher as League champion keeps the significance on the regular season- something that’s recently been lost in major college football. Back to Sparman’s reference it’s possible to have four teams share the Ivy Conference championship.
